Oh the irony...

Your IQ is too low. There can be no dialog between us.
That is the problem with forums: no IQ test is mandatory for registering. No IQ score is written next to each forumer's name. We only end up with artificial numbers like "experience", "karma",...
So any forumer can pretend to analyze what anyone else wrote, without any scale of intellectual value whatsoever to separate people.
Anyone else see the irony involved in this poster decrying the "low IQ" on this board while using words like "hugest" and "forumer"...

I'm going to go out on a limb and conclude that you must have forgotten your Mensa "forumer" password... either that or you kept typing www.menses.org and couldn't understand why you were only confronted with a bunch of bitchy bleeding women.

Problem with reselling is the fact that you (the seller) should delete your copies. All of them. But that cannot be checked. The publisher has to trust you did that. And that's why reselling will never be officially possible.

Actually, presuming Google keeps it all online - which is what they seem to be saying so far - then that problem is wholly avoided. When you purchase the book, access rights to that file/whatever are switched on, when you sell it, your access rights are switched off and the new "owner" has them switched on. Ta da!

I mean, people will find ways to copy them out of the interwebs, which will probably be against the TOS, but aside from that possibly illegal activity it should be do-able.

Ah, like that... But, as you won't be buying the book in the first place... At least, personally, if I don't get a "real" copy (be it something I can hold, or at least take some room on a data carrier), I don't find it buying...

People are already complaining about DRM: what if the shop stops, I can't get a new version for a new device. But if this service stopped, you'd be left with absolutely nothing. While if the shop stopped, and you made a copy of the book, you can always try to de-DRM it.

Well yeah, that's one of the major problems with the whole idea in general. It's more like renting, or a paid subscription service, than actually buying anything.

I'm really only supportive of the idea because it's bringing something new to the market place.

I'm wondering, though: if Google plans to let people read books online, probably with a proprietary reader, wouldn't it be similar to scribd, only non-free?

Hi Sweetpea,
If you recall, discussed earlier in the thread Google's eBook model is to sell browser base books. The user cannot download the book. They must have an internet connection and connect to the internet to read the book.

I'm just speculating since the consumer of a Google book cannot download the eBook, Google can offer it's consumers a features to sell/buy used books as a way to make their model more attractive.

The comment your responding to was my response to post 55
