I just found this thread - I hadn't noticed it before, and I love it!

The whole site is a little bit scary to start with, but whilst slowly joining in I've found people are very friendly and welcoming, and the Lounge is becoming my favourite part of the site. It was helped when I was ill and had to take a day off work and discovered the joy of spending all day reading posts, and was helped when I lost my job and everyone was sympathetic and patient with my ranting!

I'll answer as many questions as I can remember, and probably add a few bits of extra information on the way.

Chocolate's my favourite food (dark chocolate obviously). I don't think I should have to choose between Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, there's time for both. We never had pets when I was young as we had a baby sister instead. Once I saw how much hassle that was, I decided to keep my life pet free for a while, but if I ever change my mind it'll probably be a cat as I'm too lazy to walk a dog every day

I read a lot, which is why I'm wearing this shirt. Reading was so much more appealing than doing the laundry.

I'm also quite nosy, which is why I read everyone else's answers before I thought about mine.

I picked my username because when faced by an empty box my imagination ran away, and as my real surname is difficult to spell I liked the idea of a world where my name was simple.

I often find I can't sleep. I used to read, now I read on my sony and check MR at the same time (often with a cup of tea - if I'm awake anyway the caffeine isn't going to hurt). With an international community, there are always other people here.

And yes I'd love a drink - whatever's on offer, not fussy.

Thanks to all of you for your courage in sharing and I would like to say I love reading everyone's comments on this forum. I usually pop in some during the day, but mostly I cruise through late at night (which I guess is early morning for those across the pond).

I've found lots of very useful information about my 505 on this forum and many people very willing to help. I may not have enjoyed my 505 as much without this forum and all of the beautifully formatted books offered here. I've even started to enjoy some of the classics I'd passed over before.

I especially love that the authors on this forum are so very willing to share their work with us.

Like the others before me, I was intimidated by the lounge and all the insider knowledge and jokes. Doing searches to figure it out resulted in many pages of threads and tid bits of information. (Not to mention hours of reading to simi figure out what was going on. Then, heaven forbid, if I missed logging on for a day or two! I think threads breed overnight!)

Gesh, a beginners MR dictionary would be great!!

I want to thank everyone (that should make sure I don't forget anyone) for making this such a great forum to visit, learn, and have fun reading.

@ Alphapheemail I just knew that Godiva chocolates and the song, "I Believe in Miracles" by Hot Chocolate would help.

For those who don't know, allow me to introduce myself.

I'm DesertGrandma. Desert, because I live in the desert, and Grandma because I am one. Clever, eh?

I innocently wandered here just about a year ago, after purchasing my Kindle1. You know, that device thats getting the crap beat out of it in my poll. (click on the link).

Being totally ignorant, I just kept asking questions, and people kept answering them. No one swept me out with the trash, so I kinda just ............stayed.

I like to travel the boards, but have learned to not get involved in TOO serious discussions. There-in lies the road to hell. Trust me.

I like helping people, when I can.........or at least directing them to where they can get help.

I like meeting new people, and saying "hi, and welcome to MobileRead." Cassidym is better at this........

I love the unconditional acceptance I've found here. The members are truly the 'wings under my feet'. So many times, I've been sad, mad, depressed, and this place, just reading the posts, has made me feel better.

Has anyone noticed I like doing polls, also?

We are a microcosm (sp?) of what the real world could be like. People chatting, disagreeing, but always being able to stay civil. Almost always. People supporting one another, regardless of cultural differences, race, sexual orientation, religion, or lack thereof.

I don't know how, or why, but somehow we've all found one another.

And we are continually finding ourselves welcoming 'newbies'. Some stay, some don't.

Those who stay.........become one of us.

Yeah, well, that sucked harder than the air into Spencer Pratt's ears, and it's only that you seemed so reasonable about it that stopped me from requesting an entire battalion of Solid Gold Disco Dancing PNSs over to your workplace to "have a word" with those responsible (I believe the "word" the PNS most commonly like to have is "eviscerate", though "emasculate" runs a close second when gender-applicable).

Oddly, as the person for whom "lazy" is a core-part of their life-philosophy, walking the dogs is one of my most significant pleasures, twice a day. I'll admit, though, that our former Homer (the cat) required less "maintenance" than the two terrierists. You know, if you said "ferrets" here...well, there's no wrong answer, and you wouldn't have been alone (though if you said "spiders", Queen Zee wouldn't be visiting you anytime soon, and would probably put you on her "Ignore list", not for personal reasons but to avoid any chance of your posting photos ).

Yes, and practical considerations and appreciations should never be ignored, and so I offer those same people (well, not the 505 people, because they probably didn't help me much with my Iliad problems, but, still, that's not to undermine their efforts at all) a laurel and hardy handshake (yeah, I'm plagiarising Blazing Saddles) to all those who have done all the good things that make me want to send them all a strip-a-gram of their preference, or possibly just a gift voucher for their favourite (e)book store if only I had the means and didn't have the Restraining Orders against me.
