Hesitate with DR or kindle DX.........

Sorry, I know everyone here is using DR. I am also planning to buy one. However, when I go to amazon website, I find kindle DX is only 500 USD(=350EU only) and.... and it seems the kindle DX can be ordered from Europe too. So I hesitate which one to buy, because basically I just want a reader to read my academic papers and the screen of kindle DX is 9.7'', 824*1200, which might be fine for A4 paper.

More importantly, I can save a lot of a lot of money!!!!!!!!Is a 9.7'' screen OK for A4 paper??!!! |

Just wait for few more days until people post their real experiences with Kindle Dx. DR is quite good for reading academic papers and annotating on them. The pdf reader is fast enough. I am not sure how well Kindle Dx would handle generic pdf documents.. and there's no support of annotation on pdf. I like my DR, but am willing to trade it out if Kindle DX's performance is comparable to it.

Yingwu, as Harry says, the Kindles are sold and shipped by Amazon only in the United States.

From their main page "Shipping: Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S." There are "work arounds" but you would best served by buying a device that is designed to work in your country. |

And I think you can "live with" a 9.7'' screen, especially if you value paying much less for the DX. I find the Wacom stylus, expandable memory and folder organization invaluable, so the DX is not an option for me. Your only reasons to hold off a purchase, IMHO, are: 1. iRex may drop its price. 2. Plastic logic might release a price lower than the DR. 3. Sony might announce a reader (possibly the same 9.7'' as the DX) with PDF support and memory expansion for much less than the DX. |

I would imagine that, once 9.7" screens enter mass production, all the major manufacturers will release machines using them.

1)I had to pay the import duty and VAT (about 20% of the final price) 2)Shipping costs were relatively high (about 50$) 3)I could not open an amazon account, so I couldn't buy ebooks from the amazon website. 4)whispernet doesn't work in Europe, there is no infrastructure for it. I was aware of all the above points nonetheless I couldn't resist but surely I would not recommend doing that. |

Wait a few more years - and I'm sure you'll buy a device superior to those available now

But seriously, if you always wait for something better and cheaper you'll never buy anything

I agree. But if there are strong indications that the price is likely to fall in the immediate future, it may be worth the wait. Just don't wait too long! If you're convinced that a device isn't flawed terribly, then you can set yourself a watch window and buy at the end of it, regardless.

At this time, we don't offer the Amazon Kindle DX and associated digital content from the Kindle Store to our international customers. Please note, currently you cannot use 3G in Ireland, the Whispernet wireless connection for the Kindle utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (EVDO) data network which would work in US. We value our international customers and hope to make kindle and 3G available in more locations in the future. Kindle device can be shipped only to a U.S. billing address. When you place your order for an Amazon Kindle, the shipping address for the delivery must be recognized by our systems as a valid U.S. address (referring to the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia). So I give it up directly! Have to!!! |

I agree with your comments, "it may be worth the wait. Just don't wait too long!". I really set a watch window, as I have paid attention to DR for 7 months, almost from its release. I have seen how the firmware been improved and I think I trust irex after doing this. Now the end of my watch is very close (I never think there are so many potential products coming out though), I need to make my decision quickly. |

I have a Kindle 2 from some days and... none other device can be compared with it. Speed loading books, speed turning pages (like a PDA), search engine (search entire library, search into a book, search into dictionary). Then only bad thing is screen contrast, that can be solved applying font patch (and you have at least 17 different fonts to select -Georgia 2 makes the difference).

I'm from Spain, and the only thing I cannot do with my K2 is connect internet and direct download from Whispernet. I can read no-drm books and I can purchase and read Amazon DRMed books as I were in USA. Search in Google for "purchase kindle outside usa" and you will find how. I've purchased a DX and I'm in way to sell my practically new DR (purchased in 2009 Feb). |

I live in Italy and Amazon doesn't allow me to buy drmed books from the kindle store, they require a USA address and a USA credit card. |

It starts in "Comprando Cauldron..." Basically you only need an active gift card and none other address than one in USA (you can use a public or non-existant address), however I use the address that MyUS people had given to me. |
