Fair enough, as a contractor that's what I'm there for. But the discussions about this have been going on for several weeks and no-one gave us any hint that there might be a problem, so we haven't had the opportunity to look around for other options. I'm lucky - as I'm crucial to the project I'm working on I've got 2 weeks notice, but other people are going this week. One person took holiday last week. If he'd had any hint of what was happening he wouldn't have done that.

I accept no job security as the price I pay for being a contractor, but I would have liked to be warned that this was a possibility so that I could review my options earlier. All the information we've been getting recently is about how well our business has been doing, so we've had no warning signs.
Whilst I am sorry for any individual who is in this position, isn't that just one of the risks of contracting? Isn't that why contractors are paid so much more (in simple monetary terms) than permanent staff?

I employ a lot of contractors, who cost me more than permanent staff, and the reason why is simple: they're expendable; as the demand flexes, I have a pool of people that I can let go (or take on) quickly and easily. I do try to be fair and give as much notice as I can, but sometimes things just happen and you can't give as much notice as you would like to.

Personally, I never had the balls to go contracting, for exactly the reasons above. I've no doubt I could have earned a lot more money than I have in the good times, but we're not in those days at the moment and contractors have to live with that fact - there is no real job security as a contractor, but that's the trade off you make for the higher pay.

Thanks everyone for your good wishes and sympathy - and for allowing me to let off steam. I will hopefully have calmed down by tomorrow, and started applying for my next job!

At least tomorrow should be better than today anyway

That might be part of the reason, but it's certainly not the whole reason. Contractors don't get sick pay or holiday pay, so any time off they have directly impacts their pay packet. They also, I think, have to pay their own NI contributions. They almost certainly won't have the benefit of any company pension scheme, season ticket loan and other perks such as paid training that permanent employees get. The company can afford to pay contractors more in terms of bare salary as they won't be incurring most of the other costs associated with permanent employees.

Really sorry to hear that Ruth. And contractor or not, that's a shabby way to treat people.

Good luck with the job hunting

Thanks Am.

My main rant was because of the shock factor - usually you can spot that there are cuts coming and start looking round before it's officially announced. And I'm not paid significantly more than the permanent employees because it was a long term contract covering for a permanent employee on secondment. I'm not sure what's going to happen now - she's not back until January and the work's not going to stop coming in! (Luckily that's not something I need to worry about now )

As I said earlier this is one of the drawbacks of being a contractor - I must have been lucky in the past to have worked with people who have dropped hints when we needed to start finding alternatives!

Hopefully this means the next one will be better.

At my sons graduation tonight they asked, twice that you please do not yell, clap or whatever for each student so that all students names can be heard. Then applaud at the end. Did anyone listen? NO!!! OF course not. You know the rules only apply to the other people right!

Some managers obviously need to go on a 'get-real-life' course, one that includes tact, diplomacy and sensitivity. In another context this would be funny.

Keep positive Ruth and good luck with the hunting .....

That is so selfish! But sadly typical of many peoples' lack of consideration.

Was Pilotbob Jr. the only student who received their graduation in respectful silence?

The 4th and 5th grade students at my daughter's school put on a musical based on Disney's The Jungle Book. They asked the parents not to take any pictures or recordings because they had legal obligations with Disney which limited recordings. I saw many people turn the flash off of their cameras and take pictures anyway! And they wonder why our jobs as teachers are so difficult. If the parents don't follow rules, what makes them think the kids are going to?!?

This must be a world wide thing. They did it at every play, event and at graduation here also.

People just can't control themselves when it comes to their kids.

It only takes one - as soon as it starts, everyone does it because no-one wants their child to be left out!

Plus, I've found over the years that most of the rules of the classroom also apply to adults - particularly the one about if you want people to remember something you have to say it at least three times!

Once the names started being announced the screaming was almost non-stop. My ears started hurting. Luckily we were in the SunDome

and they had a more than adequate sound system, so you could hear all the proceedings very well.
