As for the Cool-er, it may in fact do well in Europe where ePub is popular.
i just checked and they actually have this feature available for DRM free books to avoid copyright infringement.

Just for clarity DRM Free does not equal Public Domain (Copyright free) or free for that matter. There are many DRM free books that require purchasing to read. O'Riley books and Bean books are good examples.

I suspect you are referring to this company providing public domain books available to you reading device, which is still not a bad feature.

What is bad, though, X, is that Ectaco claim to be able to get you any book, free of charge. They are either not telling the truth, or they are providing people with pirated books .

Exactly. And I am surprised that nobody who owns a Jetbook is willing to request a book we clearly know has DRM or has been scanned. I guess they don't want to have to dump their Jetbooks if they find out the company pirates ebooks.

Can you please request eBooks that we know has DRM or has been scanned like LoTR or Harry Potter?

I think anyone can request an ebook. They don't know if you have a Jetbook or not. Just tell them you bought one at BB&B and want to read LoTR on it so you are making a request.

I apologize in advance to this thread. Juggernaut Jon is indeed unstoppable but every once in a while he needs a time out.

You lie JSWolf, because Ectaco does not. Unless there is a page I have not seen, the Ectaco book request form and words describing it are these, in totality.

The jetBook is an ebook reader, and it now supports quite a few formats, which are clearly shown in the specs. You insist on an addendum saying "We don't read Kindle books, we don't read Sony books, etc. Get off it, you embarrass yourself. Repeatedly screaming "liar" when it is obviously not so is a disgrace.

It reads ebooks, except those locked down by their competitors. Were there not ebook readers before the Kindle and your Sony? Was it not only a short time ago that NY Times bestsellers were not available for download? Is an ebook an ebook, or is an ebook now an azw or lrf file?

I'd have more respect for you if you claimed they existed to read dedrm'd ebooks, which is why I purchased mine (all my dedrm'd ebooks are purchased from Amazon). But of course they have never made that claim and they have nothing whatsoever to do with the dedrming of ebooks.

The jetBook doesn't read drm'd ebooks, and if you stepped back a moment and thought about it you just might find reason to admire them for it.

Someone has done as you asked before and posted about it. Ectaco responded with a list of links for free ebooks. Shame on you.

Actually, as an experiment, I just tried it, and you do have to have a JetBook registered. So we'll have to wait to hear from an actual JetBook owner who's tried it.

Although, to be fair to Ectaco, nowhere on the site did I see the promise to provide any book for free. All they seem to be promising is to look for it for you if you can't find it on any of the sites they recommend (feedbooks, manybooks, PG, etc.)

So they don't promise that any book can be read on it, but they do seem to skim over the fact that many can't. Not exactly honest, but not flat out lying, either.

For what that's worth.

Don't they? Check out their comparison matrix. http://www.ectaco.com/comparison-JetBook/ Look at:

Quote:
Number of titles Unlimited. 30 popular WEB sites that we have located hold at least 500,000 FREE access books and audiobooks. You can also request a title from us which we will find and send to you right away.

Cost of titles FREE. Ask us what you need and we will run Internet search for you FREE
How would you interpret that? Especially when the columns they have for Sony and Amazon they list prices you have to "pay" for the books.

I agree with pilot bob, they clearly say that books for the jetbook are FREE and you just need to ask us for a title you can't found.

Could we have the Jetbook religious wars removed from this thread and put in a thread of their own? It'd be nice to read about the Cool-er here...

Not to continue a debate that belongs elsewhere (), but this is the big reason why I sold my jetBook and bought a 505. I sent request after request from all kinds of books (mostly classics such as Steinbeck, but around 20 others) and I received the same email response each time directing me to a few websites that didn't have the books in their library.

I have nothing against the device, but do have a beef with their support (or lack there of) as advertised.

I put in a pre-order and they have not started shipping yet. You can put in a pre-order without having to give a CC number, they said that they would:

"Thank you for pre-ordering the COOL-ER. You are in line to purchase one of the must have items for any serious reader. Once stock becomes available we will contact you about payment and dispatch."

Anyway hopefully I will be getting an update email soon!
