It is the battery. You can get a lighter ASUS but the 6 cell has a great battery life.

I have an ASUS eee 1000HA as it was the best available at the end of last year. It is a great unit with a 10" screen and nice keyboard. The only problem it has is the right shift key is a little hard to reach. The 1000HE seems to have fixed that problem, but I am very satisfied with my 1000HA. I picked it for the screen, size, the long battery life, the keyboard size, the 160 G disk and Windows XP. The 1Gig of memory is easily replaced for 2Gig but I haven't bothered since my checking of memory use still hasn't indicated any need for more memory.

I tried the CNET tester. By my estimation, it's displaying the results in kilobytes per second (KBps) instead of kilobits per seconds (Kbps). Converted to Kbps, the CNET tester gives you 12,958 Kbps which is in line with the Speedtest.net result.

I "chose" this netbook because I got a really good deal on it at shopgoodwill.com . Aside from all the benefits that a netbook gives in terms of portability, I have a large collection of audio books that I can selectively access over my network without having to transfer via USB or SD flash. Also, since I'm a computer geek, I'm adding enhancements to this nice little goodie. One thing I will do is install software that will let me rotate and enlarge the image so I can hold and read it like a book.

Hey, folks! Just to add my two cents, I recently bought a 1000HE as well and am quite pleased with it. Before this I owned an original Eee 4G and it was okay, but the screen was a bit too small and the keyboard was wonky. In contrast, the 1000HE actually has a screen big enough to do work on, the keyboard is completely different with a nice response, and the battery life (which is what I bought it for) is fantastic.

I love looking at the battery and seeing the icon is almost empty, then mousing over it and reading "1:30 left".

I've installed Ubuntu 9.04 (my preferred OS) to dual-boot, but haven't had much time to fiddle with getting a few hardware details right. Most of it "just works" with 9.04, though. Anyway, I've been using the XP side and it's fine for what I need at the moment.

Thumbs up Love my Samsung NC10

After some lengthy research, I purchased my Samsung NC10 a few months ago which I found to be preferable to other models.

The biggest factors for me were 1) display and 2) a usable keyboard. I compared hands-on tests with all the other manufacturers (except Lenovo) and just wasn't impressed with their displays, keyboard, ergonomics or build quality. Of course, this is all subjective to the individual user.

The Samsung is beautifully designed and made, included is a six-cell battery giving outstanding battery life. I won't waste space here with the specs, as they are readily available, from all manufacturers, for comparison.

As I have always had black or grey laptops, I chose the white model, which is a flat, pearly-white finish and quite nice. One caution - other colors, such as the glossy blue, or glossy black, while also attractive, are notorious fingerprint magnets and look terrible if not wiped clean regularly.

As much as I love my Samsung, I have no plans to use it as a dedicated reader. My Kindle serves that purpose!

Asus Eee Pc 1000 HE.

Like it so far. I had a play with HP 8.9" and Samsung NC10.
Didn't like:
HP - too expensive and small screen (they do have 10" now)
Samsung NC10 - power button on the right hand side of the case, I managed to push it twice accidentaly. Screen doesn't open all way 180 or nearly 180 like Asus 1000 HE.

After some additional research, I think I'm going to return the HP (which I haven't received yet - it arrives Wednesday) and go with the Asus 1000HE.

Here are my reasons:
  • Though I wanted the Express Card slot for my Broadband Wireless card, I have found that I can an unlocked USB version for under $100 on eBay (no need to extend my contract or pay $100-$250), I just need to move the SIM card to the new unit. That will save me money over the price of the HP and still keep it compatible with my current laptop.
  • The Asus has a higher screen resolution than the HP.
  • I'm very curious about the "multi-touch" trackpad.
  • Longer battery life without having to spend more money to upgrade the battery.

On the whole, I can get more bang for my buck with the Asus. It looks like I'll be purchasing the blue one, though I wish the colors I see available on Asus website were available.

I've had my blue Asus 1000HE for about a week or so and I'm still getting used to the multi-touch trackpad for zooming in and out in particular. Everything else I can do.

I like the multi-touch trackpad because I find that the trackpad left/right buttons quite stiff in comparison. A minor complaint I have is that there is no "right-click" multi-touch replacement when using it.

Your other reasons are very valid especially with going with a USB broadband device over an Express Card device. Personally, I would opt for USB devices where possible. I've already experienced an issue where a PC Card I own won't work in my netbook or any other device limiting me. If that PC Card was a USB device, I'd be able to use it. For the most part, USB devices work on any device for most OS platforms.

BTW, daffy4u, congratulations on your 3000th post.

Thanks for your insight on the trackpad. It does seem like it take a bit of getting used to but it may be the wave of the future. I think the newer Macs use the same type of trackpad.

The only thing I use my Express Card slot for is with the boradband wireless card. I did some Googling and aside from some SSD Express Cards, there isn't a whole lot out there that makes the slot useful for me. So I'd also rather migrate away from it and toward USB (all my other peripherals are USB).

I do hate that the USB version sticks out so far but I think I can work around that with my mini-hub.

I saw a device (don't remember what) the other day that had three internal (under a cover) USB ports so you can stick things like broadband dongles and thumb drives in them without having to have them stick out.

What a great idea, I have several USB dongles that I want semi-permanently plugged in w/o having to worry about them being in the way or breaking them off .

There's a club? Cool! Does this mean I can join the netbook version of the "Blue One Next to the Fish" club?

I've placed my order through Amazon even though I had to pay for shipping (other place was free). I know Amazon's Customer Service and would rather go though them should I have any problems.

Thanks for the Congrats!

I have a mini 4-port USB hub that hangs that I can use to keep things from sticking out. If you remember where you saw the other hub, please post as I might like it better.
