PRS-505 sadly not the ipod of the next decade

Look at it this way, considering my 11th grade class as a representation of the American population, out of 20 students 15 have ipods or similar music devices. Yet only 4 of us read enough to justify investment investment into an e-ink device. Traditionally, the use of an e-ink device is something relegated to nerds and geeks. And we all are to a certain extent or we wouldn't be in a forum dedicated entirely to portable reading devices. And our numbers are falling fast as people read even less. ![]() And the blue ebook is NOT faster. PROUD OWNER OF NOT-BLUE EBOOK

I think that A4 touchscreen e-book readers will become ubiquitous in universities first and schools later, in not more than 2 or 3 years. The cost savings are huge, and education can make the e-book reader something as common as an ipod in very few years.

I never thought of the ebook readers to be used for textbooks. I don't have any textbooks that could be possibly be read in a 6 inch screen, but you have a point. I know a lot of college textbooks are available as ebooks but high school textbooks are impossible to get.

But A4 touchscreen readers, I agree that would catch on really fast. Perhaps this is a business venture I should look into when I grow up. |

![]() Doesn't this sound like a great idea?? Work with the schools as an outside source that can sell the incoming students a particular reader with their textbooks already downloaded on it for them? Then they can be exchanged for the new books (maybe discount the books rather than sell full price) or all books saveable for a slightly higher fee. Damn good idea! |

I got a Blue PRS-505 last Sunday at Fry's in Renton, WA (near Seattle). So far I love the thing. I am leaving for a trip next week, will be gone for 8 days. Normally I would take 5 to 8 paperbacks for a trip like this (about the max to pack with all of the clothes and stuff for the netbook and camera before the luggage explodes!), and still run the risk of finishing all of them before I land back in Seattle.

Now with the Blue Sony I already have 30+ books, some from the Sony eBook store, some from Fictiowise (all purchased for less than $7.00) one from BooksonBoard, and a handful from Google (the original Tarzan :-)). And since I will have my netbook with me, I can load more at any time while on my trip to ensure I still have plenty to read on the return trip. My only complaint so far..... Why did I wait so long to get this beauty :-) Dave... |

Yay, my new signature is working! After about 2 weeks with the 505 i can say that i am a very satisfied customer, and also incredibly thankful that such a helpful and full with information community like mobileread exists.
