I was nice and immediately got jumped on by one of those "Why don't you search?" jerks who felt it'd be better to give me a hard time about it than just helping me.

There's a place for that, of course... when things are immediately obvious if you simply open your eyes. But this wasn't that kind of issue.

After all that, I really appreciate our community here and how good we are to newcomers.

A great community indeed. However; MR does SUFFER from a Posse mentality at times. Some people get attacked too much for stating a position that is not POPULAR on MR. Then the Posse moves in and berates said person. Then again, That happens on most Forum sites in one way or another.

There is the occasional flame but we have excellent firepeople here.

And the occasional Snacker of Worlds!

But it goes away silently.

Sorry, by general acclaim I'm not allowed to...

To go back to the topic, I often find it more useful, if I know something has been asked and answered before, to find that thread myself, respond to the questioner and paste the link. It's always easier to find something if you know it's there (maybe you remember who asked it, who answered it, parts of the wording used, etc).

I find it takes the point home better, as the person who asked the question will feel "stupid" for not searching (if he hasn't done so) and will probably start searching the next time he has a question (in order to not be made a fool of again). And if the person did search but couldn't find it, at least he has his answer and is grateful you helped him.

I tend to go out of my way to help in every community(IRC, Forum etc...). If I can I'll help if I don't have the time I'll generally point the person in the RTFM direction by providing some links to relevant information(which usually should be more than enough). At time I'll be a bit more ...... and just tell the person to web search it with the keywords. And at times I'll get flack back for that. But I'll still help even if being insulted and so on. And have been in many places more than once.

Speaking for IRC... is there a mobileread IRC channel anywhere else why not make one on Freenode or OFTC so that those of us who like to chat there could go there as well...

As someone else mentioned, it's a great community because most people play by the rules and the community consists of mostly nice people who understand written discourse and respectful attributes attached to written words. Also, most people understand those same limitations of the written word. (Most.)

But, like any community, it sometimes has its silly moments and its serious moments, too - and the whole dynamic is much like a family: You sometimes want to love certain members and then hate other members, but usually everyone makes-up in the end.

If DesertGrandma was running one of her famous Poll's, and If one of the options was.......Should everyone "Recycle" their puppet sock avatars?
I would have to vote a big resounding YES. I loved their original avatars and could always zero in on their posts right away. The socks are OK but they are too similar. So think about it OK?

I agree. We have a great community here. Always very helpful and polite even when I ask a silly question. Thank you everybody.
