I once knew someone from the mountains of Tennessee. He would pronounce fire as far.
A friend claimed he had a serious conversation with him about how some words are pronounced the same but spelled differently, like fire and far and tire and tar. |

...and then there's all the strange people who pronounce "you're" and "your" the same way, when they should clearly be pronounced differently. (I say 'yer' and 'yore')

far = fur I do believe that tire and tar both = tar Oil is more or less "earl" .... business is sort of "bidnis" I hear a lot about the earl bidnis around here. I've stopped trying to have serious conversations with most of the people in the area. They can't understand a word I say anyway, so what's the point?? Sigh .... actually had someone insist I couldn't possibly be "one'a dem budie people, cause there weren't no budie church around." I tried explaining that the Buddhist philosophy I happen to follow does not believe in an all-powerful creator god, hence, no churches in which to worship a non-existent god. They walked away muttering something about "damn weird furners movin' inta thuh area!!" ![]() |

For what it's worth, I was born and raised in Arizona and always pronounced them "boy" and "key" too. I didn't start hearing people say "boo-ee" until the late seventies.

That's how we know that the three wisemen in the Bible were firemen - because "they came from afar."

Then again, this is probably because the town was named after someone called "St. John" rather than after the saint himself. Thus "sinjun" persisted in the Irish placename, but vanished from the English name, (probably because anyone looking at a map sees saint-JON-stun...) And it's 'boy' and 'kee' in Ireland too. Although, with somewhat of a reader's pronunciation in my youth, I used to hear the latter at 'kway' whenever I read it for years, until I connected the familiar sound of 'kee' with the counter-intuitive spelling of 'quay'! (In fact, I was probably corrected... both my parents were teachers.) |
