Right. I was just focusing on the "h" sound (or lack thereof) that was being discussed though. Wasn't thinking of ALL the rules and exceptions there are in American English, like the "u" you mention. There are other examples of these exceptions besides the "u," such as "a eulogy."

Just a curiosity, if you had never heard of the word "quay" before and were reading it as your first time of seeing the word, how would you naturally pronounce it? I maintain that 'kway" better fits the general ways of pronunciation than would "kee".

Of course there is the example of my daughter asking me what the word pseudo (which she pronounced swaydough) meant.

Of course the "u" in university is pronounced more like "you" than the "uh" of the "u" in umbrella. Therefore university has an implied consonant at the beginning of the word. HarryT probably knows a word for this too.

The Cyrillic has a letter for these sounds - yah, yeh, you (separate from ah, eh, ou) - which makes the phonetics easier.
