You don't have any Zedediah's over there? (Ok, we don't have many, but some!)

Probably Quaker / Protestant in usage. Seems vaguely Biblical, but I'm not sure of that!

I was brought up by my nanna, who still had her Sunderland accent, and an aunt, who had a sort-of Home Counties/RP accent thanks to voicecoaching. Which means my natural accent is something of a blend of the two. Bath is pronounced with the same ba as bat; the castle in Newcastle is cassel but in Windsor Castle it's Carssel. And I occasionally say milluk and fillum (OK - that's an exaggeration of how it comes out - it's more like 1 1/2 syllables than two.)

The American version is the more correct one. Historically, the way that metalic elements were named was to replace the "-a" of the name of the "ore" (most metallic ores end in "-a") with "-um" for the element. Aluminium ore is called "alumina", hence "aluminum" for the name of the element. Many metalic ores end in "-ia", which is why the element ends in "-ium", but it doesn't in this case.

On a slightly different note; do you say .....
a hospital, or an hospital ? a hotel, or an hotel ? I was always taught that the 'silent' H meant the word phonetically started with a vowel... though I'm prepared for pond-wise differences to emerge ? |

I have booked us a hotel room I have a delivery to make to a hospital Yep a definately feels right for me even if it may be gammatically wrong as I remember the rule you mention about silent H's |
