Hang in there!! I'm sure you'll pass with flying colors. Didn't you just do an inspection last month, or so? Or have the last 6 months flown by THAT fast, and I'm remembering the last hectic cleaning mode you were in? (True, the accident was 3 months, and I'm remembering something from before that. So it could really be 6 months ago.....)

You'd have been absolutely fine if you hadn't had the popcorn.

It's been six months. A little over six actually. And, for the past three months, I haven't been well enough to do my usual housework, so I think it's bad in here.

To make it worse, I am just now discovering that the original painter who did the interior (may he rot for eternity) knew less about painting than your average cockroach. Talk about a crap job. Any idiot knows that the more likely something is going to need to be scrubbed, the higher the gloss and the higher the quality of the paint you should use.

So, what did they paint the baseboards with?? Low quality FLAT paint!! Oh, my tail and whiskers!! I probably should have noticed it a long time ago, but I just didn't.

Oh well .... belongs in the vent and rant thread, I suppose.

Bingo! It's Lacewood a tree in the Eucalyptus family, also named Australian Oak.

Not all Purpleheart does that, it happens more with veneer because it's boiled in the proccess of cutting. Some retain a bluish chocolate hue.
The worst offender, the one that broke my hopes was Padauk. It turned from a bright orange to a dark chocolate brown. What a deception!

Here is a site featuring wood species, it's pretty accurate.

To be honest, I've never really worked with veneers, I have quite a bunch. I had a habit of buying 'variety' packs to see and have a wide range of choices but I never really used it.

My biggest problem with Padauk is it dulled my tools faster then nearly anything else I have used. Not to mention all that silica actually winds up shooting sparks when I saw or sand it... Kind of funny seeing that when working with wood! Mind you, I've only worked with it on small scale, like little pen turnings and small carved pieces.

The worst for me was trying to resaw a piece of black palm, I burned up a good saw blade as the resin gummed it up almost instantly and overheated the blade. It also took me over an hour to air out the shop, it looked like I was burning black powder in there!

BTW I thought there was one tree that retained a green shade, began with a V perhaps?

Thanks! I bookmarked that. Have you ever seen the Hobbit House's wood picture site? He likewise tries to post only colour accurate photos. http://hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/

I have a small Brazilian piece of flooring wood. It's a species they're trying to get here but the government won't allow it yet. On the back it's written "Santo Polo". The people who gave it to me say it's very common in Brazil but that's all they wanted to say. Strange. Toxic wood, protected species, special properties, brush wood? All possible.

You absolutely need good carbide or diamond for Palm and Padauk. Teak is worse than Padauk as inclusions account. An idiot ran a piece in my planer, by the end of the cut, fire was about to break out.

For Palm, try a band saw at slow speed with bimetal blade.

Last year I found something that really works for me. Instead of buying top notch 10" blades at 200$ a pop, I tried one of those Diablo(Freud) blades for circular saws on the table saw. They work great! They're only 8 1/4" but it takes care of most cuts. The best advantage is that since those blades were designed for battery operated skilsaws, they're only about 1/16" thick and are made with a slick surface. An other advantage is that the speed at the tip of a tooth of a smaller blade is slower than the speed at the tooth of a bigger blade. That's a trick from way back when carbide was a rich man's tool. Those blades cost around 20$. Sharpening a good 10" sawblade costs 16$...And since a 10" blade will only take 5 sharpenings it's a no brainer
