In terms of oddities of pronunciation, my favourite observation is the fact that 'FISH' could be written 'GHOTI'. That is 'gh' as in "tough", 'o' as in "women", and 'ti' as in "nation". nb. I remembered this from reading it somewhere but had to look it up to confirm my memory - popularly attributed to George Bernard Shaw apparently. Last edited by Bilbo1967; 05-21-2009 at 04:47 PM. |

Besides some of the differences already mentioned, I quite like the way Brits use aluminium rather than aluminum.

Yeah, I was under the impression for a long time that this was just illiteracy on the part of Americans but I have a vague recollection of reading somewhere that 'aluminum' was the more historically correct spelling.

For an example of an extreme divergence of pronunciation, my boss' wife is a Brit. She belongs to a club of British Ladies here, they get together and drink. While we call July 4 "Independence Day," their club meets and pronounces it as "Happy Riddance Day." EDIT: I changed pronounciation again, can't seem to stop misspelling it. Aye, I think it was the scientific community who decided it, I just like the way the UK version rolls off the tongue.
