I'm one of the first buyers. They opened the webshop on a sunday morning and I ordered the reader unseen within the hour. The next day they were sold out I got what I wanted at a price I was willing to pay.

Can it be improved?
Yes of course, everything can be improved.

Do I need new software?
No, I can read books on it and that is why I bought it. Sorting/grouping on meta information would be nice but I can live without it. PDF's are never going to work very well on a device this size. And I personally have absolutely no use for page numbers.

So will I buy a 'new' reader from them? Possibly, but it depends on how good the competition is. I rather buy in Europe than in the US or China.

I'm not sure i'm seeing your point there.
I've bought my CyBook because the price tag was around the amount of money I'd was willing to spend on such a device ("replacing" my Palm PDA). All the features advertised are working and no errors/freezes occuring (if I stick to MOBI/PRC).

That I have to wait some weeks/months on a new FW with new/additional features or their "no information" policy is no problem for me - it's the same with other devices/companies all the time...

But if I'd been there from the beginning (propably spending a fortune at first) and had to wait on all those features/fixes without a clear word of info... I'd surely be mad at them!

Hm, lemme think about this...hell NO, not until the hell freezes over.
And not because their product is bad, but because they're an unreliable, honeytongued bunch with a habit of not keeping their word.

Name me a company where things NEVER goes wrong... Hey why do you think secrecy in big company exists ? Don't say anything, if things goes wrong, customers won't know it anyway.

Better a company who take the risk of saying someting, even if they are most often wrong, than a company saying noting at all.

Patience guys.
Rome was not built in a day, nor the Earth in 7 (despite what you read).

I have asked Bookeen for an explanation as to what has gone wrong, but there has been no reply. [**]

Surely we can expect that there has been something to 'stop' the release on Monday (18th My 2009). One HAS to accept that, perhaps, an unforeseen bug, or doubt about the software has surfaced.
Do you want them to rush out a firmware update that is 'dodgy' just to placate us ? - better safe than sorry.

**Yes, they are poor communicators; but honestly they are not the worst I've come across...and they haven't "taken the money and run" like at least one company I could mention.....

And yes, Jon, I would buy another Cybook - my current one does what I want - despite the wish list of what would be 'nice' to have. It is reliable and I, personally, haven't found any similar device that has made me change my opinion of what is a good product.

I'm pretty sure that not bookeen's intention to have such bad answer time or things like that, but seem to be overcharged with all of their projects...

I truly apologize for my previous post.
Sure, crap happens to anybody and I should cut bookeen some slack for they're really doing a lot for the ebook market.
I just get so passionate sometimes, damn you, moodswings.
Sorry again. Go bookeen.

Of course not. Just a nice, hefty, over-priced and under-powered notebook, netbook or desktop PC. Yep. *That* will make the Cybook more 'user-friendly'.

*THAT* explains my frustration for Bookeen's service and support issues! They're Gallic and I'm American!

Derek

And, no, I'd NOT buy another Cybook given their "non"-support. If I finally manage to go for a 9.7" device, I'll go Kindle, but my next 6" will probably be a BeBook or other Hanlin V3 derivative.

It reduces the cost of phone / shipping / whatever. And for some reason, speaking the same language helps to understand each other.

Put me down in the "never again" category. My first screen cracked while in it's case and like others I have been very disappointed in Bookeens communication with it's existing customers. It's possible that it's firmware release will blow me away but frankly I expect to be disappointed there too.

That's trouble common to all e-reader screens. it's not a bookeen problem. My screen got broken, i didn't blame bookeen because i hit the reader onto something.

I'm an American. I *EXPECT* to be able to sledgehammer it, shoot it (with a .50 calibre Desert Eagle no less), drown it and electrocute it and have it keep on ticking! (Damn Timex for setting such HIGH standards!)

When it's a sturdy device without a glass plate and with a color screen for the right price. Yes, why not.....

I won't need a new reader before the above features are implemented, and I 100% agree with EowynCarter: If the product don't fits you as it is, don't buy it.

Their device has never let me down so far, and their support was (luckily) not needed until now.
