I Need a New Word

I need a new word to describe the sense of disappointment that a reader has when a book series ends unsatisfactorily. The words "disappointed" and "dissatisfied" are too vague; they could mean that the last book was bad or that there wasn't a real conclusion to the series. I'm looking for a more specific word to really get to the feeling when the reader has after putting in the work to read through a lengthy series and when an author worked so hard to build to a particular conclusion, executed that conclusion, left the characters in a reasonable place, tied up the loose ends, and wrote the book competently, and yet still left the reader ... not fully happy. In the case of the series I just finished (no, I'm not going to point fingers), the tone of the final book, especially the final confrontation, just felt off somehow; the sense of joy and wonder and humor that permeated the series was missing; too many of the characters had too little to do; and the final confrontation itself was hard to visualize. Thus, when I put the book down (well, technically, closed the cover on my Kobo), I was disappointed, dissatisfied, and a host of similar emotions. So I need a word to describe that combination of emotions.

I’ll throw out the word CHEATED! Not just letting you down in plot, character, etc. but also in the price paid for the book. I have a particular popular author and character in mind but best not to go down that rabbit hole.

Where's the fun if no one's going to point fingers and name names? Why so coy?

At best, you could save someone from a dud read.

I just say it "ended badly". One acquaintance with Portuguese roots uses 'saudade' which hopefully I've spelled correctly when discussing a series that ended disappointingly.

‘A deep emotional state of melancholic, bittersweet longing for an absent person, place, thing, or time that may never return.’ That fits my protagonist, John Corey, perfectly. There, I said it. Now name the book and author.

Would "betrayed" be too strong?

End with a major twist from nowhere - Shortstoryitis. Longer works should satisfy your expectations rather than subvert them, after all that work you put in.

Ends with a victory so hollow it might as well have been a defeat - Smileyed? I don't really have a good name for that, but something from Le Carre.

Sort-of-spoiler for the movie Chinatown:
Spoiler:
End with, essentially, a defeat snatched from the jaws of victory - Chinatowned. From the movie.

As for the actual request, a story that ends on the right notes but somehow doesn't satisfy, I don't know. I don't have anything for that.

(Edit: Added spoiler protection.)

There is no one word. What you are looking for is a phrase that describes your situation.

JUMPED THE SHARK

That came from an episode of Happy Days were Fonzie jumped a shark and that was when it was said the series went downhill from there.

In the case of a long series: Disenfranchised comes to mind.

Other than that: Disenchanted or perhaps Expectation Gap?

I'm desperately trying to come up with some quality portmanteaus, here.
