over 100 books of my kindle library just vaporized
hi,
i just got f...ed in the a.. by amazon again. the old kindle app for win stopped working. the new win11 app on my z13 tablet won't load over 120 of my manga. amazon support told me that there is nothing that can be done because the new software won't support the old drm - the web reader won't display them either... and they told me to buy a different device to read my books... the publisher said they can do sh.. either... wtf?

i hope everybody starts making backups now because it will not take long for amazon to stop let you read your old books on all devices / apps... but they still will sell you those books... so I stop buying on amazon...

The platform can upgrade their DRM scheme at any time, they don't have to support old vulnerable schemes forever. It is a duty of the publisher to update their files, not the platform.

And yes, I realize that most ebook suppliers do not consider that they have any responsibility to support their older customers. Though most of them have dumped their customers by closing down their ebook divisions. Since the publishers are not applying the DRM, how is their duty and not Amazon's? After all, Amazon happily displays the "this ebook is sold without DRM" (look at Baen and Tor for instance) and then applies DRM before delivering the book. Most publishers currently supply their ebooks in ePub format which Amazon converts to their proprietary format before selling licenses to the end-suckers end-users Last edited by DNSB; Yesterday at 05:56 PM. |

Try using Android emulator or kndl tool, those books with older formats may still load? Kndl tool is riskier, Android emulator is more annoying. I lost access to about 6 books on Windows, but iirc Android still worked.

Also, if you have an Android tablet around, you can probably install an older version of the Kindle apk, and then prevent it from updating.

If you can install Kindle for PC 2.91, you should be able to download some of the books that Kindle for Windows will not download. You can find the installer on quite a few sites. One example is UpToDown.

amazon prevents older apps from connecting to an account - so this is a no go. so they force people to update tu the new win app.
android emolation could be worth a try - but why do i have to jump through hoops to read the books that i payed my money for? i own the licence to read them, and they stil sell them on amazon without telling you that you can't read them anymore on your pc... |

Ok, I misspelled it. It is kindl, not kndl. Either way, it might work as a downloader, or might bork something, I don't know. Android emulator would work, but getting books off it might be a hassle. The blocked books are usually (but not always) pre-kfx (Mobi).
As to why, well, part of it is DRM, and part appears to be sheer sloth. Some older formats are just not supported well on their React app and they just... did not bother, and blocked them. Pretty sure you can read them in browser? (Did not try, though. ) That would be good enough for Amazon. |
