This cover is the way the cover is. With this cover, I asked AI to make the heads complete and accurate coloring. It actually looks pretty good. AI is pretty good for dealing with covers. If I get a cover with a badge or text I don't want, I can get rid of it. If I cannot a good enough image as in the case with this cover, AI can usually fix what's available. This is the modified cover with a modified Enterprise. Last edited by JSWolf; 09-25-2026 at 04:28 PM. |

Thanks, but I think it was just that the handwriting was not the best. The handwriting could also have been read as "hown" but as soon as AI came up with "power," that fit the context *perfectly*. The foreword is for a short American western horse story ... Middle English isn't quite what one would expect there! Though, interestingly enough, the horse in question does get to visit England! AI cleared up another word in the same foreword for me today. Looked kinda like it began with "h" was actually a "W." I'm rolling as many OCR texts as I can while my shaky computer with ABBYY Finereader holds up. I'm actually taking a short break while the machine reboots from yet another blue screen crash. This short 1927 book might be Mobileread eligible, I do need to check author/foreword author/artist death dates. Definitely PD in the USA tho. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I use iTunes Artwork Finder to download hi-res covers, if it helps.

The one thing that's wrong with the original is the jet trails. That should not exist as The Enterprise does not emit jet trails. |

This is an interesting use of AI, especially for older books where finding a decent high-resolution cover can be surprisingly difficult.
I think the biggest challenge is knowing when the AI is actually restoring details and when it's inventing something that wasn't there. For classic books, preserving the original artwork and its historical character seems just as important as improving the image quality. A side-by-side comparison at actual e-reader screen size would be interesting. Sometimes an image that looks imperfect on a computer monitor works perfectly well on an e-ink display. |

You compare the smaller cover to the larger cover to see if it matches. If it does and you're OK with the larger cover, then you are good to go.
Sometimes I'll have AI make changes to the cover. Like removing badges and extraneous text. Then I'll end up with a clean cover. |

I found an, IMO, even better use of AI. I point it at obfuscated code, tell it to "fix and rename" and it goes *brr*. Sure, it makes mistakes, but, let me be honest, less than I do. I get distracted more easily. And the result is testable, so it just redoes until done. And it barely takes more memory/compute to run than a modern game! (I run fully local) Magic.

AI helped me correct strings of code for calibre entry. Helped me populate the subtitle section of the kobo library with no prior experience.
