One can't even try to install Firmware 6.0.279225 on a Libra 2 since there's no initial update via koboroot.tgz.

Does this mean the older devices listed will eventually be able to run the new firmware?

Qt6 and their new rendering engine is just plain heavier to run since it's Chromium-based, and if it's struggling on a two-core Libra Colour, one can only imagine what it'll do a on a one-core Libra 2 that's slower. |

I wonder why they chose chromium-based readers over webkit-based readers.

I got the 6.x version offered as betaversion for my Clara BW. I installed it, tested it shortly and went back to the "official" version. Opening a book takes several seconds (same as Tolino does). The books have now an option to listen to books via bluetooth - this doesn't work at all; you can listen the title of the book but not the text you're reading. And the voice is like a computer voice of the 80ies.
Ok, its beta. But even a beta should work better than what Kobo offers here. I hope this is not the future of Kobo Firmware. And of course...I would miss all the stuff offered here: Nickelmenu, Patches and KoboSync with CalibreWeb - all this does not work. Kobo, please don't do this! The teng renderer is more modern than 4.x’s Kepub renderer. They do need to improve its performance, but it sure is the future of Kobo firmware. Seeing how slowly it evolves, it will take a couple more years until it works well, though.

I suspect that they will just release more powerful devices to compensate for that.

That may help with the speed, but not with the overall buggyness.

I fear they are heading towards Tolino Firmware, that has a bad reputation in Germany. The Firmware has always been buggy and slow - even it is running on the same hardware as Kobo. I have never had the experience with Kobo devices that opening a book takes several seconds - never. I just tested a Tolino a couple of days ago in a bookshop and it is laggy.
If this is what Kobo does for the future, I'll say good bye to Kobo. |
