calibre 9.17 not downloading metadata

Hello,

I've just installed 9.17 (Windows 64 bit, Windows 10 system), and download metadata is not finishing and it doesn't download anything. The issue is not in the metadata sites (or plugins by themselves), as, after downloading to 9.16, metadata download is working again.

Works fine for me, note that the first time you download metadata it might be slow as it has to download camoufox, subsequent downloads will be normal.

Ok, then perhaps that's the issue... but after around 30 seconds without doing anything, I though it has failed. Perhaps a warning would be necessary.

I checked out the metadata download and there is a large pause (somewhere between 30 seconds and a minute on my system) where I'm assuming it was downloading that package Kovid mentioned. After that, it downloaded fine.

Yes, now waiting, it has finished downloading it. The issue then is that, without knowing what it is doing, you think it's hang. But it's ok for me now.

If it downloading something temporary, it should probably report that in the log.

I have the portable version and Windows 11 pro, 60-bit. I downloaded camoufox. Calibre version 9.16 download the metadata for a single book - 10-15 sec, but version 9,17 - 60-90 sec / 1 book, why? sorry for my English.

Because the its now going through a web browser instead of direct to the site.

That means you won't be using any version of calibre past 9.16.

The problem is that a lot of site block scrapers and without camoufox, a lot of sites will be unable to accessed.

Was the metadata on 9.17 the first time you'd tried a download? If so bear in mind that the initial run will be when camoufox is downloaded; future runs of meta data download will be faster

They are faster, but still in the range that yanekyan is giving.

I tried 8 metadata downloads from Amazon and the times ranged from ~2 seconds to ~14 seconds. Samples from the log are:

In my case I use: goodreads/Kobo/Amazon/Smashwords, and it's almost 1 minute per book in average.

It is slower cant be helped, in order to avoid bot detection it has to mimic how a human browses, which means it is unavoidably slower.
