problem with en dash (Dialogue) when converting from docx to epub2
I have noticed a problem when converting docx (woord) into epub2.
The issue is regsrding the dialogue. At first glance there is not a problem, BUT when you make the window smaller manually the text line dialogue does not follow the same rules as the other text. The line starts where em dash begins, wich is wrong, it should go to the absolute left where the toher tetx is. This means that readers can be confused to think that the dilaouge is a new sentence, a new line. I´m inserting images to clerafy. Please help anyone. |

I would suspect this is an issue in the style used in the docx and not in the calibre conversion. Instead of setting a text indent for the paragraph starting with en dash, the indent is created by setting a left margin which would apply to all lines in the paragraph if it extends over multiple lines.

It depends. Try to turn off the Autoformat / Lists option first.

I suspect the OP would want a solution he could apply in Word. So he needs a non-indenting style in Word. I suspect Google/Bing/DuckDuckGo/ or whatever they prefer would be the best source of help.

This is a language specific typographical style issue (a-la CMOS, APA, MLA etc) - the establishment mandated rules are in (page 68) ==>> les règles de typographie à l'usage de l'imprimerie nationale
les-unpertinents My schoolboy French reading of that suggest that what the OP is seeing is correct. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 10-19-2026 at 05:49 PM. |

It doesn't say that you set the dialogs as bulleted lists in French.

Hello,
Thank you all for the help. It was a style setting issue as JSWolf said. But the question is why isn´t all ov the text affected, only the en dash with dialouge? Its the same settings. I master indesign and photoshop pretty well but f... me word is tricky, in my opinion. Regards |

One other thing to check when converting Word documents: Make sure that all of the code pages and character sets match. If the document was created on a computer set to Western European, it may create some Interesting Results when later processed on a computer set up for Canadian French; I've not tried that one, but I've seen lots of formatting hiccups going back and forth between US and UK English.
But don't feel too bad. It's not Francophobia. It's non-American-Business-English-phobia in Redmond. Just try getting a paper with numbered equations/chemical reactions to format correctly in Word — let alone transcoded to a non-Word-native format. Or proper paragraph/outline numbering for legal and government documents, even in the US. Worse, the implementation of XML that's in the .docx format is just far enough off XML/SGML specifications that things get Very Interesting Indeed with documents that include both right-to-left and left-to-right textual content that is styled rather than in separate sections. Word throws up lots of barriers to documents created outside the mindset of a pretty new marketing employee with a bachelor's degree in business administration (or less!) — especially when there's a mandatory formatting issue that's outside the marketing department's interest. So even before reading the rest of this thread, I would have pointed at Word style-definition issues as the most-likely source of the problem. Quote:
