Simplest and best-supported update option still is to re-run the Calibre install command in the download instructions.

How is that simpler then just a few clicks of the mouse?

You add the calibre install string to a .sh file and click to run it. Since it already has sudo, enter the password and away you go.

I've a few saved scripts; install current; install a beta version; install a specific version as a secondary install. Easy peasy

Just to clarify: Calibre Updater works on all three systems (Windows, macOS and Linux), not only on Windows.
It only installs stable releases, not portable versions or betas.
If you post the exact text of the warning you don’t understand (or a screenshot) in the plugin thread, I’ll be happy to explain what it means.

When you tried to install DeACSM, you were using calibre 7.6, the version that comes with Linux Mint.
That version doesn’t bring all of its own parts: it uses some from the system. One of them has a version number DeACSM can’t read: it expects something like “3.0.9” and finds “3.0.13”. Because it can’t understand it, it thinks that part is missing and refuses to work. That’s why calibre showed “Invalid plugin”.
It wasn’t your fault or the procedure’s. It’s an incompatibility between that calibre version and the plugin.
The official calibre (the 8.x you installed manually later) brings its own parts, so DeACSM should work there. If you still have 7.6 installed, it’s a good idea to remove it so you don’t open it by mistake.

However, if you've installed 8.x, there no reason not to install the latest 9.x.
