Once again, updating the calibre source has broken calibre. (Calibre 9.16, source downloaded about 20 minutes ago). Hopefully either a point release or a new release will again fix this. Until then, open calibre without source.

I looked at d:\calibre\calibre-master\src\calibre\gui2\__init__.py and replaced the code from line 96 with:

Which I borrowed shamelessly from your change in img.py and it seems to be working now.

Released 9.16.100 the main new feature is that the amazon and google images metadata plugins now work again by using camoufox.

Sadly while 9.16.0 from source worked with Amazon to download metadata, the 9.16.100 from source gives me an errno 22 on metadata downloads from Amazon regardless of whether using Amazon servers or a search engine.

I also noted that regardless of which country I set for the Amazon servers, Amazon.ca was used and if I fed the URL into Firefox, it returned the correct result.

The Google cover download also failed with an errno 22 while the Amazon cover downloaded failed with an errno 22. Trying search engine and the search for the cover also failed.

Using the Windows version of 9.16.0 on Windows 11, the viewer was unable to display a JXL image. I just got a blank window.

I get the same results as JSWolf. In my test file, none of the .jxl images open and large .avif images are slow to open. The first 4 images are the large versions, the last 4 are shrunk to a more normal size.

The windows metadata download bug when running from source is now fixed. As for JXL support that will come when Qt WebEngine is updated to a version of chrome that supports it. In calibre it is only supported for conversions not viewing/editing, there arent any EPUB books with JXL images anyway, so it's not urgent. I just decided to add support for it now since I was in the area. As for performance, that comes from Qt WebEngine when viewing/editing, not calibre.
