[GUI Plugin] EPUB3 Page List Generator (Amazon Send to Kindle Compatible)

EPUB3 Page List Generator

Want to see real book page numbers on your Kindle instead of locations? This Calibre plugin makes it possible!

The EPUB3 Page List Generator adds print-style page numbers to your EPUB 3 ebooks, making it easier to follow along with a physical book or find your place using familiar page numbers.

Works with Amazon Send to Kindle!

No need to convert your books to KFX. Just prepare your EPUB 3 books with this plugin and send them to your Kindle using Send to Kindle.

This project is an extensively updated fork of the original plugin by Kaspyy.

Features:
  • [] Real print page numbers: Use the original book's page count when available, or let the plugin estimate page numbers automatically.
[] Find page counts automatically: Look up print page counts using a book's Amazon ASIN or Goodreads ID.
[] Use your own page counts: You can also use a custom Calibre column to supply page counts.
[] Better page placement: The plugin tries to place page breaks at sensible points, such as paragraph and section boundaries.
[] Process multiple books: Generate page numbers for several books at once.
[] Keep your books looking the same: Adds page navigation without changing the book's visual formatting.

How to Use It:
  1. [] Download the plugin ZIP file from the GitHub repository below.
[] In Calibre, open Preferences → Advanced → Plugins → Load plugin from file and select the downloaded ZIP.
    [] Restart Calibre if necessary.
[] Select your EPUB 3 books and click Generate Page List.
  2. Send your books to your Kindle using Amazon Send to Kindle and enjoy page numbers!

I tested this on 7 ePub3 books which already had a Page List section in the navigation document derived from a specified physical book. I removed and saved the existing page list, ran this plugin and then compared the output. There were quite a few differences between them since the original page lists were generated from an existing physical book and the new page lists are using a synthetic APNX page number (I used the plugin's default 1850 characters).

I would not term this "real" page numbers any more than I would say that page numbers from Adobe's Synthetic Page Number algorithm were "real" page numbers.

Is there any advantage to the page numbers generated by this plugin compared to the ones generated by the APNX Generator plugin?

DNSB, thanks for taking the time! The plugin can retrieve the actual page numbers using the Goodreads ID or Amazon ID in your book’s metadata. You just need to enable the appropriate option in the plugin’s preferences.

Different from APNX Generator

All in one solution. The modified EPUB will now work with https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle . When the EPUB is sent to the kindle on the cloud, page numbers will be observed on the kindle where it didn't before.

The actual page numbers (more precisely, the page numbers from a specific physical edition of a book) seem to be only available when the book has been linked to a physical edition from Amazon.

Again, for me, page numbers on a reflowable book are purely for my amusement. Even my physical books can not agree on page numbers though given the size differences between hard cover, trade paperback, mass market paperback and the variations of each, that is understandable. As far as I can tell after too many decades reading books, the is no ONE TRUE WAY for calculating page numbers (my apologies to Mercedes Lackey but that phrase was so spot on).

DNSB, Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The plugin can also read page numbers from a custom Calibre column, so users can supply their own page counts or page-number data manually.

Ultimately, I did this to solve my own workflow issue: getting page numbers on my Kindle when sending EPUBs through Send to Kindle, without having to convert them to KFX first. I realize it may not solve everyone's needs, but I hope it's useful to others who have a similar workflow!

Can you make the plugin use the page number IDs found retail ePub?
