How to store two books w same author and title in different languages?
I noticed a thing today. I have a book with the same title by the same author but in different languages, Swedish and English. But when I transferred them, only one showed up. When I then transferred the other again, the first disappeared from the reader in Calibre and on the reader, when I opened it. It turned out that I had to change the book tilte. First I forgot to copy the new name to the Title Sort, and when transferring them again, it didn't work. When noticing my mistake I changed the Title Sort accordingly, and then it worked. Both Swedish and English version now showed up on the reader.
Since I don't like to have an incorrect title for one of them, is there another way to solve this? Does Calibre not also read from the other fields and see that they are two different books, even with the same title and author? I don't read many non-English ebooks but one acquaintance of mine enjoys reading translations. What he did was to take my Send to device template and add - {languages} to it so the ebook language is added to the filename of the saved to device copy.
My template is: Code:
Ebooks/{author_sort:sublist(0,1,&)}/{title} - {authors:sublist(0,1,&)}
Code:
Ebooks/{author_sort:sublist(0,1,&)}/{title} - {languages} - {authors:sublist(0,1,&)}

Where do you do this? I only find the Template functions, which looks slightly similar. Should I have the existing template visible and change in it? Could you perhaps describe it more, thanks. Do I need to have the reader connected? Will this apply to all new added books, having the same name or not? |

When this happened to me, I just used Calibre's metadata editor to add the language each as
Pour ne pas disparaître--In English Pour ne pas disparaître-French Low tech, but it seemed to work |

Yes, that's what I did to. Just thought there was another more permanent and elegant solution.

That would do it yes.
To break down the template a bit more: Ebooks/{author_sort:sublist(0,1,&)}/{title} - {languages} - {authors:sublist(0,1,&)} The Ebooks at the start of the string just keeps the book files from being stored in the root directory since that has limited directory storage and with long file names taking up multiple entries, you can easily run out of directory entries before disk space. Subdirectories can extend the directory storage so that is not an issue. The {author_sort:sublist(0,1,&)} entry stores the book files in subdirectories under Ebooks based on the first entry in the author sort list. The :sublist(0,1,&) is what restricts it to the first entry. This is based on trying to keep the total filepath/filename entries as short as possible since calibre will start truncating to fit if they get too long. The {title} entry is calibre's title string used as the first part of the filename. I do not include subtitles or "A Novel" or etc. in the title. The {authors:sublist(0,1,&)} uses the first entry in the author list as part of the filename. Again this is more to keep the total filename/filepath below calibre's clipping threshold. For your purposes, the {languages} item will add the 3 character language name to the filename. If the book has more than 1 language declared, you might want to add the :sublist(0,1,&) there as well to keep the first language. Good luck! Last edited by DNSB; 10-16-2026 at 02:59 PM. |

My template looks like this: ebooks/{author_sort}/{authors} - {title} Where would I put {languages} in my template? Like this?: ebooks/{author_sort}/{authors} - {languages} - {title} Last edited by marp68; Yesterday at 05:44 AM. |

Okay great. What will happen with the existing organised books on the reader? Will this apply to only new or change everything, already stored books on the reader? And will this effect how the books, also all books, are organised in Calibre library? Calibre didn't complain then importing the same book but in another language. Is perhaps this why the reader also treats it like the same book? If it would have been organised differently in Calibre, maybe the reader would treat it as two different books.
