Yes, the plugin opens the .jar file as a .zip file and searches for the version number in two different configuration files.

FYI: The new version has a new preference setting: maxOfEachMessage, which is enabled by default. If you prefer the behavior of older EPUBCheck versions change this setting to false.

Seems to work here after re-downloading the epubcheck.jar file. There was an error message in the process but did not catch it.

What was the exact error message?

If you re-install the plugin it'll always display the following messages:

EPUBCheck updated to 5.4.0.

I've been seeing this weird mention of 'v5.4.0-fix' version for around a couple of weeks but it has never impacted the performance of EpubCheck which is on v0.4.7.1 (and that's on all my machines).

And with 'update check:true'

There was was definitely a bug in the version detection routine. It only got triggered if you also have this preference setting:
