Elmren Voice — turn your epubs into chaptered m4b audiobooks (Mac, runs locally)
Hi all — indie Mac developer here. I have read the "What TTS voices do you use for reading ebooks?" thread and the Calibre TTS-to-MP3 plugin thread many times, so I hope a listening tool is a fit for this forum (mods, please move if not).
I built Elmren Voice, a Mac app that turns ebooks and documents (epub / docx / pdf / txt) into audiobooks: - Imports the book, splits chapters, synthesizes speech, and exports a finished chaptered .m4b audiobook — plus mp3 and a self-contained HTML player with word-by-word highlighting. - 64 built-in voices, or clone your own voice from a ~10-second sample and have your books read to you in your own voice. - Runs 100% locally on Apple Silicon. No cloud voices, no API bills, nothing uploaded. One-time purchase ($39.99), free trial with 120 minutes of synthesis, 7-day refund. Honest notes: - Calibre stays your library manager — this is the listening side. The classic TTS-to-MP3 plugin route is Windows/SAPI; AudioBC and similar open-source projects get you part of the way too. I built this because I wanted Mac-native, chaptered m4b out of one import, and my own voice. - It is AI speech, not human narration — meant for your own library, drafts, and long reading you would otherwise skip. Happy to answer questions and take feature requests. Demo of the word-highlighting player the exports produce: https://elmren.com/demo/?utm_source=...audiobook-line |

Quick follow-up for anyone following this thread: I wrote up the full EPUB-to-M4B workflow — chapter marks from your table of contents, cloning your own voice just for the rough listen-through pass, and the honest boundary if you are eyeing ACX: https://www.elmren.com/blog/epub-to-...audiobook-line

I've added a downloadable M4B sample to the site so you can check the exported file before installing Elmren Voice. I'm the developer. It is a 34-second sample based on The Tale of Peter Rabbit, exported by the app, with three chapter markers. It is an illustration of the file format, not a complete audiobook or a new app release.
For Mac writers and readers who have a chapter they want to listen to, the first test can be small: import one short DOCX or EPUB you wrote or have permission to use, choose a built-in voice, export M4B, then open it in an M4B-compatible player. For revision, listen for awkward wording or repeated phrases. Cloning is optional. The short-chapter steps, existing EPUB-to-M4B tutorial, sample download and Mac trial are together here: https://elmren.com/use-cases/convert...tent=audiobook Current requirements: Apple Silicon M1 or newer, macOS 13+. The standard trial is 7 days / 120 synthesis minutes; a license is $39.99 once for one Mac. Speech generation runs locally; initial downloads and license checks need internet. If this fits a task you already have, I'd like to hear whether you could export and open your first chapter, or where you got stuck. Please keep your manuscript private; no public review is needed. These are local listening files, with no promise of ACX or Audible acceptance. |
