I watched that review earlier. I found it odd because of all the features that an ereader has the "warm light" is probably the one I'd ditch first.
But everyone has their own priorities and preferences. |

The takeaway isn't quite that he wants a warm light (even though he does, hah). It's that for this price point, to be missing it, means it's not a good value for the money. It's better to step up to the Paperwhite.

Unless like me you hope that the lack of a warm light means the LEDs will be white and not a mix of white and yellow, so therefore you might get a cooler screen that with the Paperwhite. Or, like me, you want the small size specifically .

That may be true for you and other buyers, but again, his point is that since it doesn't have a warm light, it should be cheaper.

Perhaps alternatives to the Kindle Basic should be considered? After all, there are quite a few 6" B&W ereaders available.
One example would be the Kobo Clara BW, 6" Carta 1300 screen, water resistant (IPX-8 so 60 minutes under 2 metres of water), a front light with adjustable brightness and colour temperature, Bluetooth for audio and other accessories. Amazon Canada shows the Kindle Basic 2026 @$199.99 Cdn while the Kobo Clara BW shows at $179.99 Cdn. Add in the cover ($67.99 Cdn for the Kindle Basic vs. $34.99 Cdn for the Clara BW) and you are looking at $267.98 Cdn vs $214.98 Cdn. The new Pocketbook Verta is also in the discussion though it's €169.00 list price converts to ~$270 Cdn (~190 US). It is IPX4 water resistant certified so less than the Kobo Clara BW but sufficient for the occasional rain drop or accidental splash. It does offer page turn buttons at the bottom of the screen for those who prefer buttons. |
