Why would the author name be incorrect on the device...
...while in calibre it is correct?
I recently brought in 3 books to calibre by Haruki Murakami, not a name easily conflated. Of ten books by him on my Kobo Clara, three have Anglo names, all different. They all fit in order in the series "Murakami". Never seen such a thing before. How to fix this? |

What names are they displaying on your Kobo, then?

Philip Gabriel (2)
Jay Rubin After resending them, one name dropped and duplicated one of the others. |

They seem to be the translators.
Those names are not visible in Author or Author_Sort in calibre? |

No. Both fields in Edit Metadata are Murakami.
E: I didn't think of the possibility of the name of translator. But you're correct. I opened the books and there it is. Somehow that's coming over in Send to Device. Last edited by Dal Bhat; Yesterday at 08:05 PM. |

It's probably somewhere in the metadata, then. Open the book in the calibre editor and check the content.opf file.

Preferences:metadata plugboards What it does is sneaks (merges) other fields and data into standard places (eg Authors or Title) on devices that use metadata, not filename. Example: for an AZW3 via the content server, puts {series_index:0>5.2f|| - }{title} into the normal title on the device. |

No, never used.
Not at my library device at this time; I'll open that Preference later and see if I can intuit what to do. Along with following Sirtel's suggestion. |

For what it may be worth, a Kobo ereader will use the first entry in the author list in the .opf file as the author when importing the book. If you have automatic metadata send enabled, this will overwrite that with the author(s) from calibre's metadata. This is one of the reasons you need to plug your Kobo back in to allow metadata to be sent after the database entry has been created during the import process.

I opened the opf files for the books and saw that the translator(s) were listed FIRST as creators. After editing them out--one time I replaced the name with the author name, one time I just deleted those lines--and resending to the Kobo, with metadata update, all is well. Here's what I saw: |

Out of curiosity, what calibre version are you using? The sample from the .opf seems to say calibre 5.99 was used to create it and that was a transitional version for the calibre 6.00 release.

Looking at metadata plugboards, it seems to me that there should be some syntax to cause the author field to be the one identified by
id= "id" from the screenshot above. I might be talking out of my hat, but that line does (apparently) distinguish the author from the translators. I just don't have that skill. Edit: DNSB, just saw your post. 9.15 |

The important part for a Kobo ereader is the dc:creator, the ID is pretty much a matter of indifference since it is mostly relevant to refines. In theory, a translator would be correctly identified with a dc:contributor with a refines to assign the translator role.
In your case Code:

aut <dc:contributor id="translator1">Philip Garbriel</dc:contributor> trl <dc:contributor id="translator2">Ted Goossen</dc:contributor> trl An example from the OPF for an edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with John Tenniel's fantastic illustrations: Code:

aut <dc:contributor id="illustrator01">John Tenniel</dc:contributor> ill |
