Regardless how you felt about them, there are those (quite a few really) that consider them classics. That is the problem with remakes. And I really don't buy the excuse that films need to be updated for modern viewers. I grew up with modern special effects (well, the Star Wars era at least) and have no problem watching, understanding and enjoying classics including silent films. Remaking Kurosawa? I -know- Dante wrote a special place in Hell for those producers/directors!

If you are not creative enough that you need to remake something, just rename it and change things around a bit. It is what writers, playwrights and film makers have been doing for centuries. Otherwise you are just cashing in... Bleh...

Perhaps since, after you'd drawn the pentagrams and made the incantations, Tam O'Shanter came to mind and you felt watching was safer than dancing?

Like Psycho?

And after all that, I think it is time for an episode of "Mad Men"....

I suppose I could just about accept that somebody, somewhere once watched Red Sonja or the Karate Kid without being violently sick and trying to gouge their own eyes out (it is a big world after all) - but 'classics', surely not?

I personally enjoyed both, each in their own campy way... I would argue Karate Kid is certainly a classic with phrases and references that have easily become part of American (and possibly the world's) culture. It is also the epitome of the 80's underdog/bully film genre. I'm not saying you have to like it, I never would say anything like that to someone, but certainly you can see its influence?

Red Sonja isn't along those lines, though Conan would be.

I do consider The Day the Earth Stood Still a classic, and didn't think it needed a remake, but still, if I had a copy, I think I'd watch it, to see what they did. I understand the makers took both the original film and the short story into account, and in my mind that makes it a reinterpretation of the original, rather than just a remake.

Oddly enough, I liked The Karate Kid. Perhaps it was the age at which I saw it-- or maybe I just liked Pat Morita in the role.

I'd have to say I generally agree with this. Including Disney "interpretations" of classics.

Oh, yeah! Now he is a great character. A remake would suffer without him.

I'm taking a short break from campaigning to save humanities and Welsh teaching in my university department (and, incidentally, save my own job).
The University Council could vote tomorrow to reject the proposal, or to send all our jobs to be evaluated by the redundancy committee. There's a demo, a load of media coverage, and some celebrity support. There's not much more we can do tonight.
The campaign blog is here:

Patricia, what is the reasoning behind all the cuts? I'm sorry to hear it, and hope it works out for you and everyone else concerned.

It is now illegal to discriminate against part-time workers in the UK. Many of our tutors are part-time, hourly-paid staff. They are legally entitled to a pay increase. This could lead to our pay budget being increased by about 40%.

Instead of being disappointed at the fact that the part-timers have been exploited for years, the authorities are just sacking them.

We believe that we can explore other funding sources, make economies elsewhere, and make some very careful cuts, so as to preserve a lot of the teaching.
