I have to remember when reading on my Kobo. Let me try to explain it a different way.

On most of my ebooks, I have removed the embedded fonts. On some books, I have left the fonts in, because multiple fonts are used for clarity or effects or layout or other useful reasons.

Presently, I have to remember if the book is one with embedded fonts, and manually toggle between "Publisher Default" and "myfavoritefont" before and after reading that book.

I don't want to have to do this manually. I want the Kobo to automatically use a specific one of my user-installed fonts as the displayed font, UNLESS the book contains embedded fonts, in which case I want it to use the embedded fonts. I want this to happen without any effort on my part.

I think that if were to I enable "Default ePub serif font" and set the Kobo font face setting to "Publisher Default", it will accomplish this, but I don't want to go through the trouble of renaming the font to 8 characters and re-patching my Kobo if I've made an incorrect assumption.

Should I break this out into its own thread? I hate to clog threads up inappropriately.

You can also apply Un-force font-family override p tags (std epubs) which will let you override the embedded fonts with your choice. If you read ePub. if you read KePub I think the default is to override embedded fonts with your font choice.

I don't think "Un-Force user font-family in KePubs" or "Un-force font-family override p tags" match my ask as described in paragraph 4 above. I don't mind using the embedded body font in the books where I have preserved the fonts.

The first and most important thing to know is: do you read epubs or kepubs? Because they behave differently re embedded fonts.

Kepubs, with the built-in reader, and I'm running the NickelTypeFix if that matters.

Then the patch "Default epub serif font" is of no use to you, as it's for epubs only. I think the patch that I recommended, "Un-force user font-family for kepubs" will do what you want, i.e. let you see the embedded fonts if they're there. And it's for kepubs.

@fogice, the way to do what you want is very simple. As @Sirtel said, use the patch Un-force user font-family for kepubs. Then search for ePub with embedded fonts. Edit them. Remove the embedded fonts for the body font. If there are other fonts used and you want to keep them, then you can. This will allow you to select the font you want for the main font and still have the embedded fonts.

It's that easy.

I appreciate both of you holding my hand through this. Thank you.

I tried the "Only show stats SmartLink" patch (and nothing else involving smartlinks) on my Clara HD, and it sort of works, in the sense that it always shows the same SmartLink, but it's not the stats: it always shows the reading settings, instead.
