Thank you for the guidance. I'll do it. But...

...the firmware and patch forums seem to be populated by seasoned users quite familiar with the drill. I'm not shy to open zips and tweak stuff, but, in this case, is there an install guide somewhere? What do I do with this patch?

The old instructions are here:

I've no idea if the process is different with these unofficial patches for newer devices or not, sorry.

You can try using the KoboPatch WebUI: customization (NickelMenu, KOReader) and patching via your browser instead of the command line method. For some people, it is easier than using the CLI.

The process has changed. I decided I didn't want to have to put in the yes/no in the .yaml in the source directory. You do it in the kobopatch.yaml file. It's a lot easier as you can just edit the firmware version in the file for a newer firmware and keep your yes/no. You just have to look at the list of what's known not to work to see if you were using any of those patches.

Some folks want to manually edit some of the patches and not just use the default option. So they still have to go over the yaml files.

It can still be done to go into the .yaml in the source directory and customize.

If you do customize any of the patches, in kobopatch.yaml, put in a comment right in front of the customized patches so you know which you've customized.

If I understand this correctly, I edit the kobopatch.yaml file to change to "yes" those items that you previously listed.

Save the file.

Where (folder) on the device, when connected via usb, do I unzip the edited patch file?

And then run the .bat?

Or, if I use the WebUI link, I point that to the edited patch.zip?

The rest of the instructions are the same as in the post I linked to.

Copy the firmware file to the src folder
Copy the original firmware you just downloaded into the kobopatch src folder.

Install the firmware if needed
Install the firmware on your kobo BEFORE proceeding with the next steps. You can do this by extracting the contents of the firmware zip into the .kobo folder and ejecting.

Run kobopatch
Double-click kobopatch.bat on Windows, or run ./kobopatch.sh on Linux or macOS. On macOS, you can drag it into the terminal and press enter (you may need to go to System Preferences - Security and Privacy - General to confirm that you actually want to run it).

Install the patches by copying KoboRoot.tgz into the .kobo folder of your device
If the patching succeeded, a file named KoboRoot.tgz will be created in the out folder. Copy it to the .kobo folder of your device. Safely remove your device once you are finished. On Linux, you may have to press Ctrl+H to show the .kobo folder.

  1. Create a directory and unzip the patch ZIP file to this directory.
  2. Download the firmware ZIP file from https://pgaskin.net/KoboStuff/kobofirmware.html and put it in the src directory.
  3. Edit the file kobopatch, yaml and change no to yes for the patches you want to apply. Then save it.
  4. Double click the .bat file (Windows).
  5. In the out directory will be a file KoboRoot, tgz. Copy it to your Kobo in the .kobo directory.
  6. Eject the Kobo and wait for it to install. The Kobo will reboot and you'll be good to go.

Happy to help. Now we have a place to point others if they need to know how to do it.

A general question to supplement what we've learned here:

Are the settings in a patch for a particular firmware sticky? That is, if the device is upgraded to a subsequent firmware release, do those patch settings have to be re-enabled?

When you install a different firmware, you have to redo the patches.

If there's a new firmware, I'll do some testing and then post the patches. If anyone fixes anything, then I'll redo the patches and if iany of the fixed patches are what you want, you can redo without having to reinstall the firmware from full. Just do it like you did when you installed the patches.
