It could be worse.

You could be trying to explain "dial tone" to a fourteen-year-old kid who's on his/her/their third smartphone. Or what a line printer is.

Perhaps worst of all, you could try explaining "assembler." I'm also old-school enough to have done machine-language programming on 6805/9 and 80xx micros, and a PDP-3. (I'm not kidding about the JCL punch cards, either.)

I love that my introduction to programming was simultaneously learning what a variable is in Sinclair ZX BASIC and hand assembling Z80 opcodes before poking them into memory. In those days you really learnt how things worked.

Oh, it was worse. I was trying to explain unzipping a file, and it dawned on me that they might never have had any reason to make an archive. And then I felt really old.

There are still people alive today who have never used a computer, a smartphone or internet. Heck, my mother, who died 4 years ago, was one of those (she just was not interested and I did all the online stuff for her. The most technology she could be bothered to learn was the TV remote, a dumb cellphone with buttons and an ATM). Thinking of this should make you feel young again.

My parents were the same. That doesn't make me feel young. I also have archaic skills like writing in cursive.

Yeah, me too. Not that I write much these days. My handwriting has seriously deteriorated for lack of practice. There is just so little need to write something by hand. Everything is digital, including the shopping list. OTOH, my niece who is in her thirties has a handwritten list tacked on her wall, for reminding various things between family members. I live alone, so there's no need for this.

So maybe there's still hope for reading and writing.

Even large multinational companies have this problem. I recently had a customer use her phone to pay for a very large sale. The card was American Express. The sale went right through and said no signature required. Two days later I get an email from Am Ex Security and Fraud. They wanted me to provide a signed charge slip and prove I had the card in my possession at the time of sale. The proof they wanted included a signed and imprinted copy of the card and an Itemized sales receipt. It is impossible to imprint credit cards now days because they do not have raised letters. I also had objections to providing an itemized receipt to them. They can approve or decline a customer's card, but they have no right to know what the customer was purchasing.

Kindle for Windows has updated to 1.1.3824. Satsuoni hasn't had a chance to dig into it yet. For now, downgrading to 1.0.25218 is the solution.
