With firmware 6 using the same renderer for both, will kepub go away?
Kobo firmware got good enough for me a while back that I've just stopped updating my devices, since I sideload even my Kobo purchases. So I'm a little behind in the latest Kobo news.

But with firmware 6, they will be using the same renderer for ePub and kepub. I'm curious to know if that means ePub will have feature parity with kepubs. And if so, will kobo retire the kepub format?

I guess that all depends if the stats still work with epub or not. With my Tolino Vision Color I didn't really see anything that was different from kepubs.

Nope. Kobo has devices that do not run the 6.x firmware. My Libra 2's latest firmware is 4.38.23828. But I could see Kobo not sending KePub to Kobo's on new enough firmware.

Unless they update older supported devices to firmware that also uses the same renderer for both even if it doesn't have all the features of v6.

Aside from my Clara BW, I also have a Nia and Libra H2O.

I recently got a Clara BW, set it up in sideloaded mode, skipped account creation, and manage the content with calibre. It works fine.

I don't think that I'll ever turn on wifi because I don't want something updating that fixes a device that, to me, isn't broken.

There is a patch requiring your consent before updating. It works perfectly. I've turned wifi on for one of my Kobos several times in the past year and it's still on an older firmware.

Kobo should be able use their DRM for ePub. Besides, if it was just adobe DRM, then the ePub would be used with RMSDK and then the new renderer.

I don't think Kobo would choose to use their non-standard DRM on epubs: they would lose a lot of sales to people who read the epubs on other devices.

Why would they have to pay Adobe? Kobo uses their own DRM scheme on the devices.

What Kobo would do is use their DRM on ePub when the ePub are being downloaded by a Kobo Reader or app. The rest of the time it would be Adobe's DRM.

And if you received KePub or ePub would depend on which firmware on your Kobo.

An unofficial modification of the software. It’s generally very simple and safe and reversible. You’d find the thread for the firmware you’re using in the kobo dev forum here on MR

Don’t let the developer thing scare you off it doesn’t require you to be a developer or know coding etc.
