Tools eink-emulator - an emulator for Kindle and Kobo devices

Been working on this for a while so thought I'd share.

eink-emulator is a QEMU-based tool for emulating Kindle and Kobo devices using bootloader, kernel and rootfs images from firmware updates.

It'll be of particular interest to homebrew developers and security researchers.

It currently has support for most Kindle models, including:

K4, K5, KT2, KT3, KT4, KT5, KT6, PW1, PW2, PW3, PW4, PW5, PW5, KOA1, KOA2, KOA3, KS1, KS2, KS3, KSC, CS.

There is also support for running unusual hardware configurations (e.g DVT/HVT/Prototype) for some device models.

eink-emulator is mostly stable, with functional graphics, Wi-Fi and USB networking.

Very cool stuff! So you basically forked QEMU and are adding vibe-coded drivers one by one for all peripherals?

I have a similar project for PocketBook e-readers (see its developer's corner), and I avoided this pain by using LD_PRELOAD to override system calls and running everything in userspace (qemu-user), but this obviously works only if the system is glibc-based, and has the downside that kernel bugs can't be reproduced, which for some people is the most exciting part. So if you run out of Kindle/Kobo devices to add support for, please consider exploring PB next
