A little update on the app I mentioned earlier. It's not perfect since it's based on KOReader's engine, but I took the time to record a quick little video of my experiments so far. Been doing a bunch of UI/UX explorations, too.

The idea is that it can be used alongside the built-in reader app or as the new default for all the books it can open (which excludes books opened by RMSDK, PDFs and such).

- estimately, how does it affect battery life compared to the default reader?

I don't know the effect on battery life. I suspect it'll be slightly (but likely marginally) better because it's lighter on the CPU during page turns.

CREngine, so both open just fine. I've made some changes to make kepubs styled the same the built-in reader does, for consistency.

Are the reading stats the exact same and handled by the OS, or is it tweaked and different?

Anyway, if it works on a Libra 2, I'm sold.)

Reading stats are implemented exactly the same way Kobo does it. I wanted uniformity. And yes, it works on a Libra 2, I already tested on mine.

Looks great except I don't see hyphenation or full justification in the video. Do they work? If so, can we see this in action? Thanks. Oh and have you fixed justification so it doesn't botch centered text?

Are you going to be able to keep it updated as KOReader gets updates to it's engine?

So, in regard to Kobalt:

Hyphenation and justification are working. Justification doesn't have the issue the built-in reader does, since it's a different rendering engine altogether here.

Take a look, I even added an easy toggle for enabling or disabling hyphenation. (I'll be shipping the KOReader hyphenation dictionaries, too, for better results.)



It's too soon to be making any statements on how frequently I'll be updating it, but I do intend on maintaining it.

Looks good. I have used Pocketbooks for a period and with them you can also long-press a book and it'll present options to open the book with all the different readers.

You can do the same here. Long pressing on a book tile presents:

- Read Now (opens with the default launcher, the same menu item that exists today)
- Read with Nickel / Read with Kobalt (a new menu item; whichever isn't the default)

How do dictionaries work with Kobalt? Are you using the integrated Kobo dictionaries as well? And assuming that you use the Kobo dictionary, would that also allow to add words to the flash card functionality in Kobo?

The Kobo English dictionary is set poorly. It's set to I think a left/right of 5 which means it hyphenates poorly.
