There is one way to find out. I taught my FIL to use Adobe Digital Editions and Calibre looks a bit less senior-friendly.

Either way it's an extra hassle. My in-laws wouldn't have bought a Kobo device if the library didn't prominently display them on a rack right next to the entrance.

My in-laws are elderly and none of this would have been necessary if the library would just stick with Adobe DRM!

For me, it depends on the person and their comfort with using technology. One teacher I knew from work who retired about 15 years ago is quite happy using calibre, DeDRM, etc. to put books on her ereaders. She has gotten comfortable editing her ebooks though more than happy to contact me if she runs into problems. Her sons, OTOH, enjoy reading but are not comfortable with anything more than purchasing/borrowing books on their ereaders.

As for how my parents treated me as a child? I remember walking to school when the temperature was in the -30°F range wearing a t-shirt and shorts with the snow piling up to the edge of the roof on one side of the building. I was forced to walk down those 3 flights of steps from the living area to the school rooms multiple times per day!

I had a solution to help my mother with eBooks. I installed TeamViewer and calibre on her laptop. That way I was able to access her computer to help her. I would do it from home. I uploaded books to her computer, put them in cablre and then had her plug in her Reader to the computer. I then put the books on her Reader, ejected and then had her remove the USB cable. It worked very well. Also, if she needed any help, I could see what she was doing and she could see what I was doing. It worked very well.

I also had her using Skype for video calls. That also was quite nice.
