New Boox Picco to Compete with XTEINK

Saw a few web sites talkng about a new Boox Picco that would directly complete with XTEINK X4 series. Says Boox will have a new Tile line. No word on price or release date. Should be interesting to see, especially if this new product follows the Boox Android ecosystem.

If it's like the Xteink X4 but with 300 PPI, carta 1300 and page turn buttons, then it's a definite buy for me.

No Android on the Pico, but it does have USB C.

Well, for me, there's no consideration of purchase WHATSOEVER until I see what the price (+ shippiing) will be.

Boox had a new product launch event thingy last night and several new devices were officially announced, including the Picco, so while most are not available yet, there are official product pages on their website with specs, including the price.

Looks like the approximate price for Picco is going to be $100, so directly comparable to the Xteink X4 Pro. No idea yet about the release date.

https://shop.boox.com/products/picco

It looks like it’s using pretty much the same ESP32 system and same lower PPI (235 PPI in this case) screen as the other small pocket size competitors.

It looks like you can't use the USB-C for file transfer:
"File Transfer: BOOX Tiles app or web

Document Formats: EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, AZW, AZW5, FB2, FB2.ZIP, FB3, FBZ, TXT, PDB, PRC, RTF, HTML, XHTML, HTM, CHM

Image Formats: PNG, JPEG, WEBP, BMP, GIF

(Formats above require transfer via BOOX Tiles app or web.)"

I wonder why they included the microSDcard slot then when you need an app or the web for transfer.

And with only 235 PPI as well as only 2.4 GHz WiFI it looks way overpriced with "From $99.99".

Overflow storage when the internal storage gets full?

The Boox Picco is now available for sale. Only $99, but appears to already be sold out.

They still haven't released the Picco. "Sold out" is just a placeholder for "not in stock because we're stupid and don't know how to adjust the shop software to our needs". They haven't sold and shipped a single device yet.

The site mentions the SD Card as "pre-installed"; it allows max 2TB, so not for any "overflow storage". It may be the OS is on a soldered portion, like few megabytes, and that's the user space (still the question why it would need app or web: maybe it's just to do it without a pc - e.g. SD card on a phone, and app).
It doesn't look that bad, btw (and imho). You can't expect to have it at 49$ just now, just in this period too.

The phrasing "Formats above require transfer via BOOX Tiles app or web." is interesting. Speculation: the app/web converts the formats on the fly to a single format supported by the firmware.

I'm curious to see how open/hackable it will be. Latest news/rumour says it's going to be running a fork of Crosspoint. If that's so then I'll bet someone will figure out a way to transfer books via USB or via placing them on the SD card directly pretty soon after it's released.

That could be possible. I rather stick with my cheap Android-based mp3 player as reading device when I'm out and about and want to carry a phone with me which is almost always.

I'm wondering if due to the low powered CPU, books are converted to Boox's equivalent of the XTG/XTH image based pages wrapped in an equivalent of the XTC/XTCH container. XTC is single bit per pixel B&W while XTH is 2 bit per pixel 4 gray level.

This does require minimal CPU power on the reader since the heavy lifting is done on the computer but does limit the ability to change margins, line spacings, fonts, whatever on the fly.

At least we know how much it costs and while this might be a placeholder, it usually means it will be available soon.

Dear customer,
Currently, Picco is not officially on sale yet. And we’re sorry that we don’t yet have an exact date for when the BOOX Picco will be available to order. It should be available soon, and you’re welcome to add it to your wishlist to receive the latest updates. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
