It's a backup for when I'm editing the ePub. So if I make a mistake or screw something up, I still have the original ePub which I can go back to to check out what I need to or to start over if I have to.

I do have my libraries properly backed up. This is just a backup for my editing.

I add the original to the book's data folder before I start editing. Modify Epub has been set not to create a second file, as I don't need that.

I don't use Polish. I just use Modify ePub. So I do have a second backup in the same library as I'm doing the editing.

Well, you also replace the original css, which is more error-prone. I only adjust the existing code, not replace it. So it's a very rare occurrence when I need that original file. Almost never, in fact.

AFAIK the creation of .ORIGINAL_EPUB files by Polish Books and the Modify Epub plugin is determined by the same Tweak:- save_original_format→save_original_format_when_pol ishing.

If it is set to False, neither Polish Books nor Modify Epub will create a .ORIGINAL_EPUB file.

Actually, it's not more error prone. I rarely have errors in the CSS that need to be fixed. Before the current version of Otter's Editing Toolbag, most of my errors were not fixing the ellipses and/or the em/en dashes.

I've got plenty of experience not in replacing some of the CSS. I don't use that much of a CSS and what doesn't get used gets removed when I'm done.

But the major difference is that if I run Polish more then once, any time other then the first Polish, ever Polish will use the ORIGINAL_EPUB instead of the one I want it to use. With Modify ePub, I can run it multiple times and it will never use ORIGINAL_EPUB. That to me is how Polish should work,

I only use 2-3 options in Modify Epub, so there's no need for me to run it multiple times. And I don't let it create the original_epub file at all.

I also use conversion from epub to epub, which does create an original_epub, but I delete that after viewing the result.
