Can't center images

I'm constantly having problems where images in epub files claim to be centred in the file, but don't display as centred on my Kobo (or in Adobe Digital Editions).

Example attached. What am I missing? Why does the image display as centred in Calibre editor + viewer, but not on my Kobo? And how do I fix it?

The problem is <figure>. Change it to <div> and your image will center. <figure> does not work in ePub2. Also, you never really need <figure> when you can use <div> that always works.#

Why is the code in this ePub so bad? How did it go from a retail copy to a horrible mess?

THANK YOU! That worked perfectly!

Clearly I need to read up on epub2 - I didn't even know there are numbered types! So much to learn. THANK YOU.

As for why the code's so bad - I did use epubmerge to stick another ebook onto the end of this one, but other than that, the code is what it was when I bought it. Insert blood-tear emoji here, I guess.
