Thank you! I just tried it and it works wonders. The only issue is that setting brightness to 100% doesn't set it as bright as the device is capable of when controlling the lights via the native controls. Being able to control brightness separately from warmth is great, though

That is true.
The brightest is when both the cold and the warm are on 100%.
Any change from that is not as bright.
If you want the color control to maintain constant brightness then you must limit the brightness to what is capable in all colors.
Or else the color control affects brightness.
Inasmuch as full brightness burns your eyeballs out I thought that the esthetic decisions that I made are reasonable (for me).

Waiting until you release allows the differentiation between short and long press, but it wrecks havoc on (perceivable) reaction time.

It's not a question of display modes - it's the fact that they've downgraded the CPU. If I understood it correctly it's a slower CPU than on the Poke 3.

It's annoying when looking up a word in the dictionary for the first time in a book, for instance, as it has to load the app. This is not improved by the fact that it only has 2GB of RAM either...

If only Kobo (or Koreader) had better dictionaries, supporting highly inflected languages!

I know that I'm resurrecting an old thread, but still, here's my current collection.

Yes, all are currently in use except the Kindles. No, I don't need them all. Two would probably be enough. But I like them, and like swapping between them.

How do you find the Go 7 and the Era Lite, compared to the Clara BW? (Yes, I know the screen is bigger and they have buttons - I mean things like screen quality and software).

Screen quality is fine for both. Excellent contrast. 300ppi on both (Carta 1300 on the PocketBook; not sure what screen the Boox has).

Boox Go 7:

• Software is good, but not quite as good as Kobo's.
• The native reader (Neo) is excellent, and I'm happy using it.
• The one real irritation is that sorting the library by author sorts on forenames, not surnames. I'm guessing that's the Chinese influence.
• As with Kobo in sideloaded mode, there's a choice of views. One nice feature is that it's possible to remove books from the recent list, and so reduce it to just the books currently in use.
• Their hardware is very good indeed: the devices are light, well made, comfortable to hold and smaller than Kobo's for the same screen size.

PocketBook Era Lite:

• Home screen is OK - Large image of the most recent book opened, plus smaller images of others opened, in reverse order. Two more pages of these can be scrolled through. Easy to turn book recommendations off.
• The native reader is not very good at all. I use KOReader on my PocketBooks. KOReader's UI is notoriously unfriendly, but I've got used to it, and can work with it in preference to PocketBook's.
• Book management (library list/search etc) is good.
• Build quality seems good, and the devices are very comfortable to hold.

I'd rather use either of these than a Kindle.

Obviously, all of the above is my personal opinion. YMMV.

I've read that the Pocketbook UI is very slow. Not that Kobos are speed demons, but do you think Pocketbooks are noticeably slower than Kobos?

It's difficult to be certain, because I've got KOReader associated with the file types that I open, so tapping a book on the home page opens that rather than the native reader. But yes, that is a lot slower than opening a book on a Kobo. I don't find the delay bothersome, but it is there.

Thanks again. I think I'll have to start considering some alternatives, if Kobo never releases anything b/w again (except for the Clara, and I don't want a 6'' screen).

Yes, I guessed that that was what you were thinking about.

FWIW, my recommendation for a B&W 7" reader in the present market would be the Boox Go 7. However, the PocketBook Era Lite is a little cheaper and still a perfectly usable device.

Management is by Calibre. All books are sideloaded from there; none are downloaded OTA. Wi-Fi is only ever turned on if I want to either (a) set a device clock; or (b) check for a firmware update. Both are rare events. (I did have one that was a lousy timekeeper, but I sold it on eBay a few weeks ago.)

To the extent that I do any synchronisation, it's a manual process. For that reason, I try not to swap devices midway through a book. But I usually have several books on the go at any given time, so this isn't a hardship. That said, when I finish a book, I'm careful to record the fact in two places: on the Clara and in Calibre. (The latter has a custom column for this purpose.)
