7" ereader with physical page turn buttons and an eink Carta 1300 screen
I've been doing some research on this and it seems I can't really get what I want without significant compromises.
Is there another reader out there I should be looking at? |

As I’ve understood, Musnap is essentially the Chinese iReader for the Western market - with the UI (mostly) in English instead of Chinese and having access to Google Play Store. So the way people have described it is “excellent hardware, not the best firmware” (and probably even less customer support than what Boox or Bigme offer).

I went to their site and no Readers are in stock and they do not have any decent descriptions. Plus, they are expensive.

They are cheaper on Amazon.
The price for the Musnap X on https://www.musnap.com/collections/frontpage is astronomic. Was $6,121.00 now "only" $842.00. They sell it on amazon.de for 559 Euro, although I got it a few months ago for 391.30 Euro with a coupon. |

My biggest concern with Android e-readers is timely software updates. Google releases monthly security updates for Android, and a lot of these manufacturers never push those updates out.
I own a TCL NxtPaper 14 tablet. It got an update to Android 15 in January and hasn't gotten a single Android security update since then. |

I have the NXTPAPER 11 plus..there recently was an update to Android 16.
You only need security updates if you do something that is in need of the latest patches like online banking for example. Reading and maybe browsing the internet can really be done with older Android versions. Just update the browser app regularly (here a more recent Android is useful), only allow JavaScript on websites you trust (beware many websites will not work without JavaScript, it may be better to use an extension in the browser to finetune JS and only allow it from the website's domain and not from ad networks) and use an ad blocker, a firewall like Netguard may also be helpful. Downloading Netguard via F-Droid (or github) also lets you download a host file for adblocking in the app. What do you want to do with your e-ink device? |

There are botnets on the Inernet now made of smartbulbs, DVRs, and even e-readers. If you're willing to disable your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and sideload all your books, then security updates become less important. I know the NxtPaper 14 got Android 16 in the UK. I'm hoping the US gets it soon. And I hope they start releasing security updates for Android 16 when that happens. |
