It seems, from my experiments, that there is absolutely no free option for using AI to generate covers in Calibre. You have to invest some value of cash into the AI providers hard-coded into Calibre to be able to create covers.

I use free AI to deal with covers when needed and it works well. I do it through a browser and not calibre.

I would do that, as well, if it was something that was important to me. I was strictly experimenting with a new tool in Calibre to see what the results would be. If the release notes had stated the tool was behind a paywall I wouldn't have bothered.

It’s absolutely awful… I’d be willing to pay to *not* put those covers on.

I didn't think the ones in this thread looked bad at all. They are certainly better than the built-in, non-AI Calibre creator.

And there are plenty awful covers created by human artists. I'd prefer AI covers to some of those any time.

Which AI do you use for this?

Photoshop now has built-in AI too. I've used it often to remove unwanted objects from photos and sometimes cover images. I don't know how good it is compared to other AI providers, but it's certainly better than what Photoshop could do before AI (I've had the Photoshop subscription for many years).
