Does the Verse Pro not have a fixed landscape mode?

Can I not fix the orientation of the text? Is it only in automatic mode that I can have a landscape view?

This is the only place in the manual that I see Rotation mentioned in the context of reading an ebook, and even there, it's mechanics aren't explained in any way.

Yes, they could put more into the manual.
In "Settings // Personalisation":
You can deactivate the "G-Sensor" (gravity sensor?!) which would lock orientation. And then in reader's settings rotation menu you can manually turn the view. You can actually turn on off auto there too to lock orientation.

I agree that the manual should have done a better job.
