The module appears to be in the Readers' folder. The error only occurs when I have a Kindle ereader connected and try to pull annotations from it.

I have a fun idea to display my favourite quotes onto an e-ink monitor which I will put on my wall. I want to use the annotate function on my pocketbook to create a library. I see this plugin is not compatible with pocketbooks yet. Is this something anyone would be willing to look into?

Hi everyone.

I've rolled up the last 3 "hotfixes" posted in this forum, in order, into the Calibre-Annotations repo I forked from davidfor's "master" branch a little while back, and have issued releases of all three.

The three release are here:

As of right now (September 3, 2026), release v1.17.16 is the latest and *should* work as well as what PeterT and SetKindle uploaded here recently.

By "rolled up" I mean I carefully and judiciously merged the fixes, in order of appearance, into the last davidfor master. This gets us where we are today.

You can simply download the "Source code (zip)" (https://github.com/calibre-annotatio...s/v1.17.16.zip) and install that in Calibre using the "Install from file" button in the Plugins section.

I hope we can get this to the point where we can get this sourced as the official plugin download in-app.


I invite anyone who wants to work on the Annotations codebase to please use this new repo.

Submit issues, submit Pull Requests.
There is even a discussion forum there for technical discussions of the code, a wiki if we need to document anything, etc…

The community and user-base around this plugin is very small, but I hope we can keep it alive, and thriving, by making it easier to make fixes and improvements. A message board is not optimal for managing a software project, so I really hope we can move this community effort (I mean just the software dev aspect!) to a proper git repo.

Minor nit is that when you download the source code .zip file from bopuc's GitHub site, the plugin is not in the root of the .zip file but rather inside a directory (calibre-annotations-1.17.16) in the .zip file. calibre can't load this since __init__.py must be in the root of the .zip file. I unzipped the file, moved the contents of the calibre-annotations-1.17.16 into the root and then re-zipped it. Installed in calibre with no complaints. I've attached that file to this message.

Edit: The issue with the directory inside the .zip file has been corrected so I removed the attachment.

Indeed it seems Github's automatic source code zip places the files into a directory before zipping.
Interestingly, when unzipping the "correct" plugin zip, in some cases the app doing the unzipping will also create a folder. That's why I didn't catch it.

Regarding starting a new thread:

Yeah that certainly makes sense, but I would want to make sure a few things first:

1. Repo Naming. I admit I perhaps too hastily named the github repo "calibre-annotations". I worry this choice may have been problematic in a few ways (confusion with Calibre's own annotations functionality, not clear that it is in fact the Annotations plugin…).

I'll assume we're all comfortable continuing with just "Annotations", and will go rename that repo (and maybe the "org" account I created for it).

2. Thread Naming. This also touches the forum thread naming though. "[GUI Plugin] Annotations" is already used (for this thread)… What should we call the new one?

3. The Future… I can imagine this fork needs a fair amount of cleanup work, and it could evolve, become something bigger. This begs the question: maybe a so-called "hard fork", with a new name entirely is in order. Doing this now would also solve the above two naming questions, but it is a notable "step away" from "Annotations"… One I would not take lightly and certainly not without support. (This could also be done later I guess…)

For now, I am going to figure out the release issue DNSB flagged above, and just rename the repo to "Annotations" and update the README to include some explanation, for clarity.

Hope we can discuss and figure this out.
