New AI Cover Generator

Anyone have any success with this? I'm trying to use the free version of Google AI studio, but whenever I try to generate a cover it tries to use a premium model and tells me I've had too many requests, when I've actually had none.

Is there a way to completely turn off the AI cover generator so I don't accidentally use the plagerism routine that has ruined the careeers of so many artists?

I think that would simply be a matter of not using it. You have to actually choose to generate an AI cover. I want to try it out just to see what it comes up with, but I can't seem to get it to work.

I ask because a lot of apps these days bury the commands in suich a way that you aren't necessarily agreeing to use AI and find that suddenly things are being generated (search engines come to mind, for one example).

Not with Calibre. You have go out of your way to get any of the AI functions to work.

What is the AI Cover Generator? Is this a built-in?

I doubt google's free tier supports image generation. In fact I dont know of any totally free image generation AI providers.

Just to give you an idea of what this feature is capable of I'll post some covers I generated with OpenAI image model, with basically two clicks and a thirty second wait.

It's visible in the Edit Metadata Individually windows. See attached image. I tried it on 3 or 4 books and 2 of the results were decent and the other 1 or 2 were blech.

Those aren't too bad for when you have no others available.

Gemini does support image creation on the free tier. But it may not work depending on what sort of cover you want. Some fantasy, romance, or erotic covers won't be generated. Also, you are limited to an image of 1024 lines. Which is too low a resolution.

Using the book you have the cover showing for, here is what one AI generated. As I've not read the book, I can't say how accurate the cover is. I did as it to represent a scene in the book.

Is this something that I can do with a free Google AI account? If so, I'm not sure why it's not working for me and just keeps telling me I have too many attempts using my brand new API key.

Don't use Google Gemini. You won't get a cover of a high enough resolution on the free tier.
