No tax on ebooks in my location. I won't buy ebooks I can't remove DRM from.

It's trivial to remove DRM from eBooks under Linux. You can remove the DRM from ePub that use adept or LCP DRM.

Microsoft shutting down the .LIT format servers was not the first though it was the largest and caught the most attention.

But he is correct. Also DRMed PDFs and DVDs are no problem.

We're busy copying all our floppy disks to DVD -- until the time Linux supports SD-cards.

Before DRM on DVD was broken you couldn't even play DVDs on Linux, UNIX or BSD (Only MacOS & Windows), never mind back up to HDD. So DRM on PDFs (1st), DVDs and ePubs. Region locking is also evil.

However it's a Full HD screen and the commercial pirate will point a camera at it, or bribe a projectionist in the cinema, or bribe someone in the studio, or steal the entire unreleased movie from Netflix (who only had it on loan) because they left it in a drawer (Netflix are currently being sued).

DRM is not about copyright, but control.

Somehow it's fair use for the AI corps to scrape everything, for Alphabet/Google to scan everything (earlier ruling). The USA courts don't care about copyright or creators, only the interests of big USA corporations.

See also Sony crippled the Minidisc. It was too late when they relented and brought out models without crippled I/O.

We are all paying HDCP royalties on HDMI which is a pointless DRM.

At the very least, self published authors get most of the money from ebooks. I found the hardest part about de-drming a book on Linux is downloading an ebook from Amazon.

If you can, install Windows 11 and then you can use the Windows store Kindle app. You can setup a diual-boot system.

I'm not sure if a VM would work. I don't know if Kindle needs a TPM chip or a simulated TPM would do.

What would work if to get an external SSD and use that to install Windows 11 if the computer can run it.

On VMWare Workstation Pro and KVM, the emulated TPM works for Amazon Kindle for Windows. Both of those are free for home/educational use.
