Looking at Amazon Canada and Kobo, the Kobo Libra Colour has a 7" Kaleido3 colour screen, 32GB of memory and is selling for $290 Cdn while the Amazon Colorsoft with the same 7" Kaleido3 colour screen and 16GB of memory is selling for $350 Cdn. The Amazon Colorsoft SE give you the 32GB of memory plus wireless charging but the price jumps to $400 Cdn. For entry versions, the Kobo Clara BW has a 6" B&W screen with 16GB of memory for $160 Cdn (current sale price, regular price is $180 Cdn). This included a variable colour backlight and IPX8 waterproofing. The Kindle Basic has the same 6" B&W screen and 16GB of memory but lacks the variable colour backlight and waterproofing for $190 Cdn.

Current exchange rate would have the Libra Colour for ~$210 US, the Colorsoft for ~$255 US, The Clara BW for ~$116 US (~$130 US after the sale) and the Kindle Basic for ~$138 US.

And before someone brings it up, there are no lockscreen ad supported versions in Canada.

Someone in the Nook forum just asked if I would buy another Nook. I said probably. Now I know I would. My Colorsoft SE will probably be my last Kindle unless they bring back the page turn buttons.

I know RAM is more expensive now but that is a shocking price rise. Apple have done it too. They're all in league with each other

It's not just RAM. It's basically everything. Storage too. I've heard PCBs too maybe even. It's nuts.

I paid 213 $CAD for Paperwhite 16 GB just over a week ago. It is now $280 CAD. With tax, I saved about $80CAD.

I didn't bought a Kindle Paperwhite 16 GB at all and saved $280CAD. Actually I never bought a Kindle and probably never will, it's amazing how much money I have saved and will save by doing this. Follow me for more tips on financial savings!

I've been waiting for a Kindle jailbreak that works with current firmware for a while. Paperwhites are good kit and reasonably priced (or were). It's just the amazon lockdown software I dont want. Kobo no longer make a BW ereader > 6". Also Android battery life is poor. So a jailbreaked PW 7" with Koreader is the best on the market IMO. I got lucky with the timing.

What model is the PW7? The latest I know of is the PW6.

A 7 inch PW is what is mentioned in the post you quoted.

I agree that it is (or was) a very good option. There are still some good deals on the Kindle Scribe. A Kindle Scribe with KOReader is also another good option.
