I can obviously never prove it, but I believe Martin was hoping that the TV series breathing down the neck of his ending would help provide him with some much needed incentive to finish before the TV series. But if the possibility that someone else might get to present the climax of your magnum opus to the world can't get you to knuckle down and finish, then clearly nothing is going to do so.

Probably they had a schedule to keep and some other aspects. I can believe they wanted him out of the loop.

They usually only have much control if they are also show runners. Daniel James Abraham and Ty Corey Franck come to mind. I guess Brandon Sanderson will also try to maintain a lot of control over his adaptions.

Rick Riordan was hired as an Executive Producer on the Disney+ Percy Jackson series... and it appears he actually has input and his wishes are respected. (Executive Producer can be a largely symbolic position on a tv production with no real input or responsibilities.)

I generally liked Disney's Percy Jackson series. Except for the scenes that were so dark I couldn't make out what was happening.

"Failed fantasy author"? His "A Song of Ice and Fire" series (from which "Game of Thrones" is adapted) has sold well over 100 million copies. Further, he's written numerous other books and stories. So I'm not sure how that qualifies as "failed".

Your "I couldn't give a shit..." comment reminds me of people who say "I don't like avocados so I don't care if they're more expensive for the people who do like them." What is the point of your comment if you stopped reading the books in 2000 (presumably after the third book in the series)?

There are literally no book authors who are able to get "final cut" on a TV or movie version of their works when someone else is putting up the money to produce it. George R.R. Martin is a famous author, but he isn't close to authors like J.K. Rowling or Stephen King at their peak, neither of whom could do anything but "suggest" to the people that were making movies from their books.

The reality is that dump trucks full of money make most authors abandon the feeling that a derivative work of their original has to be "perfect".

You’re confusing quantity with quality — a typical mistake. Incidentally, he only sold over 90% of his books after that lousy TV series started.

A great beginning and middle don’t make a great work. If someone still hasn’t finished his work after more than 30 years, then he has failed. Simple as that.

I think the show was (is?) much better than the movies. I just thought that the first season was kind of boring, I guess? So we never watched the second season. It made me curious about the books, though.

I'm probably in the very minority but I thought that Lightning Thief, even though it's kind of bad and weirdly abridged was super entertaining for what it is. Like a guilty pleasure, right?
