Have you been checking your books with epubcheck before sending them to your Clara Colour? I would suggest either adding the epubcheck plugin to calibre's ebook-editor or using Sigil (an ePub editor) and adding it's epubcheck plugin. You can also run epubcheck standalone but that is a pain to do.

There are good reasons as to why publishers will not accept ePubs that fail epubcheck.

I've never checked any of my books with epubcheck, I don't even have it installed. And I've never experienced this issue in 7 years of using a Kobo.

Personally I think some models might have a bug causing the problem. As all books are properly imported, it doesn't seem like it's a faulty book.

I'm willing to try it, but like Sirtel said, it doesn't seem likely to me that every time the Kobo freezes, it's caused by a faulty epub. That would mean more of my library is messed up than isn't.

I always check my eBooks. I do so in case I made any coding mistakes.

Any patches or modifications applied to the Kobo firmware?

Do you use the Kobo Utilities plugin and if so have you had it do a check database on the Kobo database on the device?

I don't replace the entire stylesheet, I only modify some entries in it. So there's no reason to run epubcheck. Calibre's checking tool is capable of catching an occasional typo I make.

I don't replace the entire CSS. I do add in my small CSS. And I do make changes to some of the existing CSS. But when I'm done. all unused CSS goes.

Unused css is the first thing that goes, before I even start editing. Otherwise I might waste my time checking and modifying css rules that aren't used.

I also remove unused CSS after I delete the unwanted HTML files.

So after this happens, the device has completely turned off, and you have to restart it, i.e. you see the 3 blinking dots for several seconds, instead of being able to wake the device immediately?

This certainly sounds like your device is crashing whenever you try to import something, which might suggest that your database is damaged in some way. You may want to check it with Kobo Utilities to see if it contains any errors, as PeterT said.

I do have KoboPatch: #1, 'my ten line spacing values', from the libnickel selection, and #1, 'disable orphans/widows avoidance' from librmsdk.

I didn't have the Kobo Utilities plugin. But I installed it and ran the check, it just said 'Result of running 'PRAGMA integrity_check' on database on the Kobo device: ok', so hopefully that means everything's fine there?

No, it doesn't turn off. Once it's ejected, the screen's light comes on, but it's only showing the cover of whatever I was just reading. Then I have to restart; there's the three blinking dots surrounded by flowers.

Sometimes it doesn't happen immediately; the Kobo is ejected, opens normally, loads the new books fine. But the next time it goes to sleep, it doesn't wake up properly - lights up, but only shows the cover of what I was reading.

Checked the database, the plugin seems to think everything's fine.

Here's a post of other users saying they experience this problem, though nobody gives a lot of technical details. https://www.reddit.com/r/Calibre/com...oks/?sort=best
