To me, if the computer or device is not usable as is, it is bricked. Another example would be a Kobo ereader where the µSD card has failed.
Can you recover a bricked device? Yes. I did that with quite a few wireless routers back when the alternative firmware was first made available. Remember DD-WRT, FreshTomato, OpenWRT and their kin? That you are able to recover from the bricked condition is not really relevant. Do most people have the skill set to recover the device and their data? Again, going back decades, I remember shipping out EEPROMs for Zyxel modems and several of the people I shipped to had tried to burn their own EEPROM and failed. |

To me saying something is/can be bricked can be similar to fud. Earlier it was reported that Windows could be "bricked", no mention of recovering from the "brick" or how difficult it would be. |

One of my co-workers purchased a Microsoft Zune 16 in late 2008 as a Christmas present for themselves. Bounce ahead to summer, 2010 and their Zune died. No local repair possible and one site that said they could possibly repair it wanted a non-refundable deposit that amounted to $125US (compared to the new price of the Zune 16 at $160US) plus the co-worker got to pay for shipping both ways. |

Thank you to everyone for the discussions. I will use my old PC/laptop/giant tablet, (whatever you want to call it) for Word, Excel, organizing photos, etc and stay off the internet with it. The Tap 20 is heavy, but it has lasted longer than any computer that I have ever had. My first was a Commodore, I think?
I appreciate all of the help. Now, I will try to download the new Windows App for Kindle on my new laptop with Windows 11, even if the kindle app is buggy. I found 7 books that I purchased in 2010, but somehow I did not get them put on Calibre with K4PC v. 2.4.0 (70904). Hopefully the new Windows App for Kindle will help. Thanks, again! |

The Windows store Kindle app has updated yesterday. The new version is 1.0.22326.0. I've download a couple of KFX and I was still able to remove the DRM.

I hadn't tried to even open/run the app in a while due to it having issues launching on my main PC, and thus I hadn't been able to use the msix tool to remove DRM yet. I had been just assuming it was due to W11 being installed with compatibility checks bypassed and Amazon being stringent about it. The system is a Haswell E on an X99 and no TPM 2.0, so it's got multiple official incompatibilites. I tried again today after K4W got updated to 1.0.22326.0 and it fully launched and loaded my library, including the most recent purchases. Tried Sats DeDRM v10.0.29 and it worked for them. They aren't newly published so I don't know how it would fare there.
